2 special programs at Glendale Mall
Special to the Recorder
The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library’s African-American History Committee invites families and individuals of all ages to two free special events Nov. 12 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Glendale Mall and the Glendale Branch Library, 6101 N. Keystone Ave. The “Family Fall Fest: A Celebration of Music... Make a Joyful Noise!’’will feature music, dance, storytelling and crafts. The day’s events begin at 11 a.m. with a maracas craft program for children presented by Tony Artis in the branch auditorium. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the Main Stage in the Glendale Mall, there will be performances by the Drums of West Africa, Khabir the Storyteller, recording artists “The Team,” and various church and school gospel choirs. Emcee will be Donavan Hart-
well of WTLC-AM (1310) The Light. “Family Fall Fest” is sponsored by Safeco Insurance. At 3 p.m., the library will formally introduce its “Faithful Readers” initiative during a public reception in the Glendale Branch auditorium. The library has formed partnerships with several local churches to introduce their members to various programs and services that promote reading. Churches, which have piloted this program, will be honored with special awards. These include Eastern Star Church/Jewel Christian Academy, Jesus Saves the Lighthouse Church, NU Corinthian Baptist Church, and St. Luke Baptist Church. The “Faithful Readers” reception is sponsored by Arnica Insurance and will include refreshments and music by pianist Bruce Poison. For more information on the day’s events, call 275-4842.
Veterans Day Parade will honor all veterans
Special to the Recorder
With the Indianapolis Police Department Motorcycle Drill leading the way, the 2005 Veterans Day Parade sponsored by Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery will step off at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 11 in downtown Indianapolis. Behind the Harley-Da-vidson motorcycles will march thousands of veterans spanning generations from World War II to War on Terror. Members of the Indiana National Guard who have been deployed during the past year have been invited to take part in the parade. Special seating for families of these troops will be located near the reviewing stand. The parade goers will have plenty to see: 85 entries; thousands of march-
ers; six high school bands; 11 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) units; 68 motorcycles; four horses and 112 vehicles. “This is aperfect opportunity for people to make good on what we hear them so often say: ‘no matter the politics, we support the troops,”’ Lee Harris, president of the Indianapolis Veterans Day Council Inc., said. “I certainly hope the turnout will be an inspiring sight to those men and women who take time to remember the sacrifices that are simply a part of serving our country in uniform.” High school marching bands from Arsenal Technical, Cathedral, Thomas Carr Howe, Westfield, Broad Ripple, North Central and Waldron will provide the musical notes to keep spirits warm - even if the weather-
man doesn’t cooperate. The parade immediately follows a solemn memorial service, which will be held on the north steps of the Indiana War Memorial at 11 a.m. Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery sponsors the two events. The parade begins at Michigan and Pennsylvania, moving south on Pennsylvania to New York, west to Meridian and north until the end at North Street. The reviewing stand is along Meridian on the west side of the Indiana War Memorial. “Veterans Day events are staged to allow everyone to take part in honoring those men and women past and present who have sacrificed for the freedoms we all enjoy,” Harris said. “Bring chairs, blankets and hot chocolate and be a part of a true Hoosier tradition.”
NEWS BRIEFS ► Continued from Page 1 BM V extends deadline for personalized plates The Bureau of Motor Vehicles has extended the annual deadline for customers to reserve personalized license plates. Customers now have until Nov. 19 to reserve their specialized plate and pay the $48 reservation fee.
