SBC Communications to Adopt AT&T Name

SBC Communications recently announced it will adopt AT&T, Inc. as its name following completion of its acquisition of AT&T, which is expected in late 2005. The brand known worldwide for telecommunications innovation, quality and reliability will soon become synonymous with the transition to a new era of integrated communications and entertainment services. The decision is a milestone in the history of telecommunications, extending the reign of a global icon. AT&T is inextricably linked to the birth and growth of the communications industry - delivering ground-breaking innovations that enabled modern computers and electronic devices, wireless phones and Voice over IP (VoIP). The brand also has represented quality service, integrity and reliability for more than 120 years. At close, the new company will unveil a fresh, new logo. After completion of the merger, the transition to the new brand will be heav-

ily promoted with the largest multimedia advertising and marketing campaign in either company’s history, as well as through other promotional initiatives. At close, the company will also announce the stock market ticker symbol it intends to use. Neither SBC nor AT&T customers are required to take action. They will continue to be served by their current provider as they have been in the past. They should order services, pay bills, and contact customer service and repair representatives from their current provider as they always have. Even after the merger closes, customers will not be required to take any action unless they want to add to or change their services. At close or shortly thereafter, complete details will be available and representatives of the combined company will be able to work with customers to ensure that they understand any differences in operating procedures as a result of making changes to their services.

The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission, the Indianapolis Zoo and the NCAA National Office are partnering to present the 2005 “Contracting Opportunity Event: Connecting Buyers and Sellers.” This event puts together purchasing agents and decision makers from the area’s largest cultural institutions as well as city and state agencies with representatives from the community’s minority and women owned businesses. The goal is to increase total cultural spending with MBE/ WBE companies in the state. The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the NCAA National Office in White River State Park. Attendance is free and no reservations are required. Parking is available underground in the White River State Park garage for $3. Buyers from over 30 cultural institutions and municipal and state agencies will be available in one location at one time to talk to attendees about contracting opportunities. Maj or cultural not-for-profit institutions in the Indianapolis area are able to apply their purchasing power and their commitment to supporting small business through this collaborative effort. From major construction projects to consulting contracts to office supplies, cultural not-for-profit organizations spend a lot of money with area businesses. This sometimes hidden source of purchasing power is an untapped resource for small business and MBE/WBE firms. This event has been structured for the convenience of the small business owner by making multiple sales calls possible within a short span of time and in a concentrated manner. Attendees may arrive anytime during the 1-4 p.m. time frame and spend as much or as little time as they wish. For more information, call (317) 630-2014.

Healing bill assistance applicaNon process begins Special to the Recorder

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is accepting applications from low-income Hoosiers who need help paying their winter heating bills under Indiana’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applications may be submitted at one of the 24 Community Action Agencies across the state. According to Jim Robertson, director of the FSSA Division of Family Resources, applications will be accepted in the first two weeks from the following: • Elderly • Disabled • Families with children under age 6 • Families at risk of having utilities disconnected • Families whose bulk fuel tanks are empty All other households are asked to begin signing up after Nov. 17. FSSA will distribute federal and state funds until May 31, 2006. Benefits will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to families who earn less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level; or $29,025 a year for a family of four. While the final amount of available federal funds for the 2005-06 heating season has not been confirmed, lastyear FSSA distributed approximately $38 million in energy assistance help to more than 126,500 households. Assuming normal weather conditions, the average Indiana heating bill could increase more than 27 percent from lastyear, according to projections from some maj or natural gas utilities. State law prevents regulated utilities from disconnecting services to families who apply and qualify for the Energy Assistance Program. Still, Indiana residents must seek assistance in order to be protected from disconnection. The amount of heating assistance varies per family and is based on household utility costs, family income, and other factors. Typical benefits this winter will range from $100 to $335. Community Action Agencies will also accept mail-in applications. Applicants should contact their local agencies for details and to schedule an appointment. For the location of the nearest agency, call 1-800-622-4973 (toll free) orvisitwww.in.gov/ fssa/families/housing/cap. html.

Indy ranks fifth in quality of workforce training Indiana's workforce development programs were ranked fifth best in the nation in a poll of more than 80 corporate site location consultants, according to Expansion Management Magazine. The poll of the corporate site location consultants ranked Georgia No.1, followed by Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina and Indiana. The article noted that "state programs are judged not only in terms of their financial value but also in terms of ease of usage and applicability. In other words, some programs may theoretically have a high value but are of little practical use to most companies. Likewise, some programs may be both useful and valuable, but are so wrapped up in red tape requirements that they are extremely difficult to actually use."
