South Africa's Tutu disappointed at pope choice From AOLBIackVoices.com

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu expressed disappointment in the choice of Joseph Ratzinger as the new pope, calling him a "rigid conservative" out of step with the times. Tutu, who hoped for an African pope, told South Africa's SABC radio the fact that Ratzinger was European was less important than his conservative views. "We would have hoped for someone more open to the more recent developments in the world, the whole guestion of the ministry of women and a more reasonable position with regards to condoms and HIV/AIDS," Tutu said. have been called to and we pray that God will bless him as he leads a very significant Christian community,” he said. Across the world's poorest continent, Catholics held out hope that leading African candidate Cardinal Francis Arinze, a 72-year-old Nigerian, would be elected. Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped galvanize international opinion against racist apartheid rule in South Africa, told Reuters news service last week an African or Latin American Pope would reflect the growth of Catholicism in the developing world. He also said he hoped the new Pope Benedict XVI would lift the Church's ban on condoms, viewed by many African governments and health experts as one of the best ways to halt the HIV/AIDS epidemic ravaging the continent. Some 25 million sub-Saharan Africans live with HIV/AIDS. Ratzinger, a German cardinal before his selection as the new pope on Tuesday, is expected to continue the late Pope John Paul M's strict defense of Catholic orthodoxy on issues such as birth control, women priests, priestly celibacy, abortion and homosexuality.

Pope Benedict XVI pledges to work to unify Christians VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday pledged to work to unify all Christians, reach out to other religions and continue implementing reforms from the Second Vatican Council as he outlined his goals and made clear his pontificate would closely follow the trajectory of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. Benedict, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, listed top priorities of his papacy in a message read in Latin to cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel for the first Mass celebrated by the 265th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He said his “primary task” would be to work without fail to reunify all Christians and that sentiment alone was not enough. “Concrete acts that enter souls and move consciences are needed,” he said. The new pope said he wanted to continue “an open and sincere dialogue” with other religions and would do everything in his power to improve the ecumenical cause.
