The 14 th Annual Indiana State Employees' Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration was recently held at the Capitol Rotunda. During the celebration (left to right) Father Boniface Hardin, founding president of Martin University; Sandra Leek, executive director of Indiana Civil Right Commission; Alpha Blackburn, president of Blackburn Architects and Judge David Shaheed, Marion County Criminal Court judge all received the Freedom of Justice Award

I The birth ' in a north'

1950 s

The birth of the civil rights movement in a northern city. Dr. King’sfrequently visited the St. John's Missionary Baptist Church to gather support for the

struggles in the south.

1960 s

As the movement and racism intensified, so did the involvement of the St. John's Missionary Baptist Church congregation. Dr. King continued to use ourresourcestogethis important message to the people.

1970's

After Dr. King assassination, The Saint John's Missionary Church was the site and rallying point forthe King Birthday Celebration beginning in 1969. Many citizens would take the day off from work as a demonstration of their com-

mitment.

1980's Dr. King's dream was carried out by the Saint John's Missionary Baptist Church through Social action programs. Our church was always open to various groups for planning and congregational support. 1990's Twenty-five years after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, The Birthday Celebration continues. Our dedication to Dr. King's dream is just as enthusiastic as the first days in the earlyfifties, when Dr. King began his quest for Freedom. 2000's Continuing to live and spread the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the principles he introduced to the world six decades ago.
