Proven Leadership for Marlon County Families
Keeping Quality Jobs in Indiana Rep. Ed Mahern knows that shipping jobs overseas hurts all of us. He has led the fight to stop job outsourcing by using in-state purchasing and contracting preferences for Indiana companies. Putting a Lid on Escalating Drug Costs Lifesaving medicines are too expensive for too many of us. Rep. Mahern worked on a program that allows the state to negotiate bulk discounts with drug companies, helping Hoosiers afford the prescriptions they need. IndyGo Routes Saved Rep. Mahern understands the importance of a good public transportation system. He led the fight to prevent the elimination of several vital IndyGo routes that provide transportation to thousands of Southside residents.
Working toward a better Indiana for working families.

ISSUES ► Continued from Pag* 1 judges need to be given more discretion and latitude. Despite his work with the Oaks Academy, Daniels declared that he is a supporter of public education, revealing that his four daughters “had attended public schools.” Kernan reemphasized his strong support for public schools. Daniels was more supportive of charter schools; Kernan took a cautious view saying, “the jury was still out” on the benefits of charters. Despite a campaign that’s advocated a number of new spending programs and initiatives, Daniels told the African-American forum that Indiana was “dead broke,” implying that the state would be limited in its ability to create new spending. Asked about Daniels’ criticism of the state having empty prisons while paying for prisoners to be housed out of state, Governor Kernan explained that it “was a bipartisan decision” that decided it was more important to “spend money on education” than opening a new state prison. “The job of the Governor is to lead and set priorities”, said Kernan. “That is what I have done and will continue to do. Mitch Daniels was honest in talking about his party’s inability to reach out to the AfricanAmerican community. “My party has been lousy, I believe, at reaching out to African-Americans. I have no defense to make for it. I feel it’s been a mistake.” Daniels continued, “I know that I won’t get many votes from this community, but if elected I will be the governor of all the people.” On the other hand, Gov. Kernan strongly encouraged those in attendance at the Walker Theater and those watching on television that it was imperative that African-Americans vote this Tuesday. “If Democrats don’t have the majority, Bill Crawford won’t be Chair of Ways and Means, Greg Porter won’t chair Education (Committee), Charlie Brown won’t chair Health,” the Governor implored. “If the Democrats do not have the majority in the Indiana House of Representatives,” it means that those voices (AfricanAmericans) will be on the sidelines. And I guarantee you, they will not be replaced with AfricanAmericans, because there are no African-Americans on the other side of the aisle”, said Kernan. The conversation with Mitch Daniels and Governor Joe Kernan was sponsored by the AfricanAmerican Coalition to Register and Vote, a consortium of eleven organizations including the Coalition of 100 Black Women, 100 Black Men, Indiana Black Expo, Indianapolis Urban League, Indianapolis NAACP, Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists, and the County Bar Association.
