IUPUI celebrates topping $1 billion in donations

(AP) - Leaders at IUPUI say the school’s ability to complete a $1 billion fundraising campaign is a sign that it has moved beyond its roots as a commuter college. School officials said recently that it raised more than $1.03 billion between July 1997 and the end of June 2004, making it the biggest public university fund-raising campaign in Indiana history and placing IUPUI in a league that includes Johns Hopkins, Princeton and Georgetown universities. “It puts us in an elite group of institutions in fund raising and research,” said Charles Bantz, who became lUPUI’s chancellor last year. “I think it also gives Indiana and IUPUI a sense of accomplishment and confidence in our future together.” The school was created in the 1960s as community and education leaders worked to form a single downtown campus for programs that Indiana and Purdue universities had scattered across the city. IUPUI now has about 29,000 students and offers degrees in more than 180 programs from both IU and Purdue. Only the University of Notre Dame has raised more money among Indiana schools, with $1.06l billion during a three-year campaign that ended four years ago. Purdue University is expected to top the $1 billion mark when its sevenyear fund-raising effort wraps up in 2007. Last week, Purdue officials reported more than $992 million in donations and pledges. Programs in lUPUI’s fund-raising drive include $36.2 million in student scholarships and 83 new endowed faculty positions. The drive also included money for a new law school building, several major medical facilities, three new research centers in neuroscience, leadership, and faith and giving, and a new $26.5 million home on campus for the Herron School of Art.
