INTERVIEW ► Continued from Page C3
thing I had done before. I wasn’t playing a lawyer or a cop or a doctor. I thought, “an airport, imagine the possibilities.” For me (acting) has never been about money. I have been fortunate and I have a comfortable life, but I try to take things that interest me. You were part of the last primetime Black drama, “City of Angels." You’ve also worked on other ensemble shows like "LA Law" and now “LAX." What are, if any, the differences in working on Black shows vs. ones pitched to a more diverse audience? In terms of “City of Angels," the mistake we made was becoming a political sounding board instead of doing what we set out to do, which isentertain. At the time, there was a lot of talk about diversity by the NAACP. The show had to carry the burden of a lot of that. Consequently, the show became a great deal about social issues and preachy, and lost the characters by making statements. Let me just say that I was, and am, very proud of the show, but it was one that was perceived as having to succeed for political reasons, as opposed tojust being agood show. Life in America as a Black person is often, whether intentional or not, a political statement Even the veiy apolitical Cosby show ended up being a huge political statement, just by existing. So do you think it’s possible to create a Black drama without politics? Yes. The writers must remember we must entertain the audience. You can be specific and endemic to our culture and do it in an entertaining way. As soon as the audience feels they are being fed medicine, they get turned off. OK, in “Sex and the City" you got down with the swirl, and again, on “LAX” there is a past

relationship between you and Heather Locklear. Were you ever concerned with backlash from the Black community when it comes to interracial dating? My concern is that I’m allowed to play a variety of roles. All of the decisions in my career have been directly dictated by my desire to create a body of work. This is just one of many roles. Every role is just one role. My “Sex and the City" character w r as one character. But I’ve been blessed to work with Y'nica Fox, Alfre Woodard, Julia Roberts, Gabrielle Union. What I’m excited about is building a character. Roger Desousa, is what he is. He’s married to a beautiful Af-rican-American woman, played by Sharon Leal, an actress I suggested after watching heron “Boston Public.” He’s got infidelity and gambling problems, not to mention everyday work. He’s a fun character to play. Rumors have it that you are making a movie version of Tananarive Due’s “My Soul to Keep.” Is this true? Absolutely. A friend of mine worked with her at the Miami Herald. She said that she wrote the character David, with me in mind. I read the first three pages and was hooked. I finished the book and called her immediately. I wanted to direct the movie. In the first year, Sam Goldwyn bought the rights. But after a year, the rights w'ere back up for grabs, and I now have them. The movie is set up at Fox Light with Rick Fumiya directing. * Any ideas on the cast? None yet. But I’m hoping to make it a franchise. The author is said to be working on a third book now. So what else is coming up for you? I just signed my first book deal. The book is called Have You Listened to Your Child's Soul? The idea for the book came from a conversation I had with my 4-year-old son. He told me he had a dream about the “last night there are no more mornings and no more nights.” Now, I don’t remember having a concrete conversation with him about the Bible, but he was talking about the rapture and when all the people go up to heaven. So, I figured I’d play along and asked him who told him about that, and he said, “God told me when he made me, but I only had one ear at the time.” I was like .. . whoa. So now we’re compiling stories at childsoul.com where parents can share similar stories, you know' those moments that blow you away. Some of those stories will be compiled and made into the book. Right now, Donnell Kennedy will be the illustrator and Simon Schuster bought it. I will write the forward.
