EDUCATION BRIEFS
SPEAKERS ► Continued from Page 1 Off Reception will feature Westina Matthews Shatten, first vice president, community leadership and global human resources for Merrill Lynch Corp. as the speaker. “We really look for a sellout crowd at each event,” Steward said. “I believe last year we averaged about 700 people, but we look for more people this time around.” The reception, by invitation only, will be held at Light of the World Christian Church, 4646 N. Michigan Road, on Sept. 16 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. “We are trying to tackle the business aspect because we are taking care of all business in the city. We are tackling health issues by having Dr. Benjamin Carson, because I think of our leaders, Charles Williams, Sam Jones and Walter Blackburn who all passed from some form of cancer,” Steward said. ‘These are issues that we need to start taking about so that we can collectively address these issues.” Civil rights activist Dick Gregory started the Speaker Series in November 1986 with its first speaking engagement. Last year the Speaker Series brought in Susan L. Taylor of Essence magazine, Ruben “Hurricane” Carter and Chief Charles Moose to the city. “We look forward to a great celebration and hope that the city really enjoys the line up that we have prepared,” said Kimberly Bostic, event organizer. For more information or to obtain tickets for the series call (317) 297-2905 or online at w'ww.stevvardspeaker.com

Teens plead guilty in cross-burning case
COVINGTON, Kentucky (AP) —Two teen-agers accused ofbuming a cross in the front yard of a Black family have pleaded guilty in federal court. Matthew Scudder, 18, of Hebron and James Foster, 19, of Independence pleaded guilty last week to violating the family’s civil rights, intimidating the family and to aiding and abetting a juvenile involved in the crime. The two face up to 10 years in prison at sentencing, scheduled for Dec. 16. On July 2, the northern Kentucky family found a 3-foot-tall charred cross in its front yard in Burlington. The next morning, the windows were broken out of a family car. The family moved out of Boone County after the incident. Federal prosecutors said Scudder and Foster conspired to intimidate the family. They said Scudder and the juvenile burned the cross and threw bricks at the car’s windows. The teens wore white hoods and shouted racial slurs as they targeted the family, the FBI said. The case was prosecuted in federal court because under Kentucky law the teens would have faced misdemeanor charges and could have been sentenced to only one year in jail.
