By JOSHUA COHEN Staff Writer The Metropolitan School District of Perry Township, along with the Martindale/Forest Manor/ Brightwood communities and many other community organizations held the sixth annual Family Fun Filled Back-to-School Carnival Celebration Aug. 26 at Julian Coleman Academy. The event encouraged parents to participate in their children’s educational process and bring together community partners through collaborative efforts. Representatives from organizations all over the city showed up to support the event and let the community know about their services. There are so many people who don’t have insurance, we want them to know about what we do,” said Shon Carroll, a health educator from Shalom Inc. “We have programs in schools where all kids are treated free for whatever they need.”

CenterTownship also attended to make sure they could support the effort. “We have our own fun fest that many of these groups come to,” said Iris Roberson, supervisor of community outreach for Center Township. “We want to reciprocate, as well as get our senices out there.” CenterTownship also donated school supplies to give away free to the students. The celebration is a large event with over 10,000 people in attendance. Other organizations on hand were the Indiana Fever, Radio One, the Marion County Sheriff Department, Indianapolis Police Department, Indiana Minority Directory and Family Fun Filled Inc. “This is a great community event,” said Crystal Rhodes, an author and founder of Grandmothers Inc. “This is my second time coming. Sheryl Wise (event coordinator) is amazing so I had to come out. We also want to promote literacy in the community.”

Attendees enjoyed the event, especially all of the free activities. “I came out for all the people and the festivities,” said Robert Henderson whose daughters performed in one of the activities. “It’s a free event with people getting together and having a good time. There’s a lot of information here.” Reach for Youth, ayouth counseling agency, made sure to get some of that information out. “We had to let the community know we’re here,” said Alycia Washington, community service coordinator. “We’re telling them about our services. We want to make sure people who need us get our services.” The Family Fun Filled Back-to-School Carnival Celebration stressed community involvement and promoted the concept of “it takes a village to raise a child.” The event brought together the organizations needed to help students through school and with whatever issues they may go through.

Changing the Experience of Prostate Surgery

Methodist Hospital patients benefit from our many cutting-edge services, including the da l//r>c/Surgical System. The da Vinci is a computer-assisted robotic device that mimics surgeons’ hand movements, allowing them to make smaller incisions and achieve greater dexterity. For prostate surgery, the da Vinci can help reduce a patient's hospital stay, provide less pain and scarring and faster recovery times. More importantly, the da Vinci can reduce the possible side effects of incontinence and impotence sometimes associated with standard prostate surgery.

You can trust our experienced physicians who are among the nation's leaders in da Vinci robotic surgery. In fact, Methodist Hospital in conjunction with Urology of Indiana physicians has been named one of four national training centers for robotic surgery. Advanced robotic prostate surgery is just another part of the Clarian experience shared by patients at Methodist Hospital. For a referring physician or to see a Urologist specializing in da Vinci procedures at Clarian, please contact 800-265-3220.
