FOUNDER

► Continued from Paqe 1 great granddaughter Barbara Turner. “But if I had met him, I think that he would feel honored as being one of the few successful African Americans in the journalism field and in the community in Indianapolis. I think that he would feel honored to be remembered in that capacity." One hundred nine years later, Stewart, co-founder of The Recorder, will be honored by being inducted into the In-

diana Journalism Hall of Fame. Stewart will become the fourth African American to be inducted just 30 years after his son, Marcus Stewart Sr., was inducted in 1974. In 1988, John Jacob Oliver, a native of Brazil, Ind., and former president of a Maryland based newspaper, became the second African American inducted. The most current of the four

Blacks to be inducted is William Raspberry, a former Indianapolis Recorder writer, editor and photographer. In 1994, one year after being inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. He remains a syndicated columnist for the Washington Post newspaper. The Recorder has gone through many changes but its mission has remained the

same. The Stewart Era A native of Vincennes, Ind., Stewart relocated to Indianapolis as a young man. He was married in 1894 to Fannie Belle Caldwell and they had six children. Stewart was a businessman involving himself in a host of civic organizations, fraternal and local boards. He was most fond of his involvement with the Knights of Pythias.

According to research, it is documented that The Recorder was established back in 1895, starting out as only a single-page church newsletter and advertising sheet known as The Directory. Over a course of two years, the paper went from a singlepage newsletter to a two-page newspaper, which focused on local news for African Americans in Indianapolis. “You would have to be a very

strong individual to not let hatred stop you from doing what you wanted to do," Turner said. “ I am glad that he was brave enough to go ahead and still be the voice for the Black community even during a time of turmoil in those days.” He co-founded The Recorder with partner William Porter. Porter sold his share of the paper to Stewart for $300 in the late 1890s. The Recorder has been located in four separate locations before moving to its current home at 2901 N. Tacoma Ave. in the 1970s. During Stewart’s days as The Indianapolis Recorder publisher, editorand founder, he recorded many events of Booker T. Washington’s visit to Indianapolis, including the time Washington spoke to the Planner Guild in May 1903. By 1916, The Recorder had turned into an eight-page newspaper with advertisements from even white-owned companies Until hisdeath inl924,The Recorder acted as the only voice for local Blacks. On April 10, beginning at 12:30 p.m. the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame will host an induction ceremony at the Waldon Inn on Depauw University’s campus where Stewart and four other journalists will be honored and enlisted. Every year, the Hall of Fame inducts those who have Indiana journalism ties. To nominate an Indiana journalist visit the Hall of Fame Web site at www.depauw.edu/library/arehives/ijhof/.
