SKATING ► Continued from Page 1 made. Capacity at United Skates East is 850 and general manager Scott Fisher said in a recent interview that overcrowding caused the fight at the St. Patrick’s Day party. “In the past, our "t. Patrick’s Day skates roughly average 150 to 200 people,” he said. “It was very unexpected forthatamount of people to show up.” The event was scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. with admission only costing $1. If you were wearing green you were let into the party for free. No one was searched for weapons, drugs, food or alcoholic drinks. No security was present. Heath said the St. Patrick’s Day party was a family party and the skating rink does not search patrons or hire security during family skate night. He said around 6 p.m. when the crowd reached 400 security was called. “The party began at 5 p.m. and started to build. (Scott) realized that it was going to get big, fast. At 6 p.m. someone on staff called the Lawrence Police Department just to alert them that we had a large crowd,” he said. “Around 6:30 p.m. Greyhound Security was contacted and they said that they would try and send a few people to the skating rink.” The party was under control without the help of security' until 7 p.m. when the fight broke out. “The girls were about 15 years old and they started fighting, fussing and causing ascene,” said Heath. “They started pushing

and one thing led to the next and more people started getting into it, so the music was stopped and an announcement was made that the party was over.” Heath continued, “Everyone began to exit and to my understanding (the Lawrence police) were already in the parking lot and more fussing was going on outside," he said. “Supposedly, one of the gentleman that left their kids at the party wanted to come inside and get his child and he and one of the officers got into a shouting match.” Shaun McDade, 25 who was arrested and booked on preliminary charges of disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement says he was trying to protect his 4-year-old daughter who was surrounded by teen-agers. Lawrence Police Capt. Brian Bulger said in a published report that parents should be more responsible when dropping off and picking up their children. “As a parent, you need to be concerned about that,” he said of the lack of security. “Most of the time, there’s not going to be an issue. However, parents should be responsible enough to ask management, ‘Is there security on the scene?’ before they leave their kids (at the skating rink).” There have been 45 police runs to United Skates of America East since Nov. 3, including an incident on Jan. 16 that involved two injuries during an exchange of gunfire in the parking lot. Heath says the security will now increased at all events.

HOUSING ► Continued from Page 1 edge and awareness of residents and viewers. “The show was designed and put together in response to several neighborhood organizations and residents who asked the city if they would use Channel 16 to get information out to home buyers or those who are interested in home buying and the facts about the process,” Coleman said. “Owning and maintaining a home are part of the American dream and thanks to the leadership of many organizations in our community, that dream has become a reality for thousands of families in Indianapolis,” said Coleman. Before she joined the mayor’s staff, Coleman was the director of the Department of Metropolitan Development and her job was governing neighborhood services and a list of other I economic development projects. With a list of initiatives under her belt, she also has the bragging rights of helping to develop Fall Creek Place during her tenure. Furthermore, each show, on “Indianapolis HousingToday,” will highlight homeownership benefits and will feature expert discussions on homeownership, increasing reliability and maintaining a home. “We have folks on the show who are experts in the real estate industry, and folks who will work with those in home buying industiy,” Coleman stated. All current homeowners or those interested in home buying are encouraged to watch the show. “My goal is to continue to provide the information to viewers,” Coleman said. “Indianapolis Housing Today,” already airing, will telecast two different shows per month on Mondays, Wednes- ! days, Fridays and Sundays at 7 a.m., 1 p.m., 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. on Government TV2, Channel 16. To confront the increase in foreclosures in Indianapolis a helpline has set up for local residents. For questions about refinancing, loan documents or simple closing questions, call the mortgage and foreclosure helpline at 1-866-722-9248. “It is my hope that as we work to increase homeownership among minorities, that we also make resources available to help them stay in their homes as we go through the various transitions in our lives,” Coleman said.
