Although the week has been well underway with speakers such as Dr. Clive Callendar, the founder of the National Minority Organ/ Tissue Transplant Education Program at Howard University and Dr. Elena Rios, president of the National Hispanic Medical Association, the event many are waiting to attend is the 34 ,h annual lUPUIdinnerhonoringDr. King. The dinner will take place on Jan. 19 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. The dinner is a collaborative event sponsored by the IUSM, the 1UPUI Black Student Union, the IUPUI MLK dinner committee, and the SNMA. The theme for the dinner is “Striving for Excellence and Continuing the Dream” and tickets for the dinner are $20 each for IUPUI undergraduate students, $35 for lUPULfaculty and staff, and $35 for community guests. Thekeynoteaddressduringthe dinner will be by pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson Sr., known for separating conjoined twins and conducting brain surgery to control seizures. “Dr. Carson has a skill that not too many possess," said Patterson. “I had to convince several key department heads that he w'ould be a good speaker for their students and staff to hear since he is a specialist (in so many areas). I thought (the department heads) would be helping diversity'-wise by bringing a speaker with his background to our school.” The afternoon of Jan. 19, Dr. Carson will speak on the IUPUI campus from 2:30 to 3:30 pjn. His presentation “Gifted Hands - The Ben Carson Story'” will be at ' the University Place Conference Center auditorium. Patterson stresses that it is very important that individuals of all races and cultures are involved in the diversity week activities because they are beneficial to everyone who attends. , He also emphasis that educating minorities is one of the significant responsibilities held by the IUSM along with honoring the life of Dr. King. “It’s very important to create as many minority students as possible for the purpose of serving their communities health by becoming physicians whom patients can truly trust,” he said. “And (for physicians) to provide informa-
