IMCPL looking for more community conversation By JOSHUA COHEN Staff Writer The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) is sponsoring its second One Book One City: Indy’s Choice. Indianapolis residents are encouraged to vote on a book for the 1 entire city to read and discuss. Nominations have al1 ready been narrowed down to 25 books. From these 25, voters will choose one to be Indy’s Choice. The purpose of the program is to encourage cultural, social and historical discussion among , the people of Indianapolis. IMCPL interim CEO Laura Johnson invites you to, “Imagine if we explored our pasts and discovered new futures'together.” If everyone read the same ' book, it would open oppor- ' tunities for people to talk i to each other and bring the community closer. It can work for strangers reading the same book on a bus, a parent and their child, and even teachers and student. One of the final 25 titles that were chosen for Indy’s , Choice is That Black Men Might Live by Rev. Charles R. Williams. It is a book about Williams’ fight against prostate cancer. “I appreciate the nomination,” said Williams. "I think this book has an important story to tell. Our health is very important to men and women as a family.” The IMCPL will feature the chosen book in library discussions and will invite the author, if possible, to talk with readers about their work. Last year’s winner, The Friendly Persuasion, was written by Indiana author Jessamyn West, This bodes well for Williams, an Indianapolis author and president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, Even if he does not win, Williams plans on continuing to spread the word about his book. “Prostate cancer, like any other cancer, is not going anywhere," he said. Educating people about the disease and advising them to get yearly checkups are all part of Williams’ efforts to decrease the number of African-American men who die from prostate cancer. Other Indianapolisrelated books on the list are On Her Own (iround by A’Lelia Perry Bundles about the life and times of Madame C.J. Walker, Only ;H7 Survived, a book about Navy vessel USS Indianapolis put together by survivors of the attack, Sign-Talker by James Alexander Thom and The Art and Spirit ol k.P. Singh by Indianapolis artist k.P. Singh.

DASIA ► Continued from Page 1 since she has diabetes and it is difficult to manage, her doctors decided that a kidney/pancreas transplant would be best,” she said. “Because Dasia has kidney failure and diabetes, the kidney alone would end the renal failure and she would have kidney function. But since she also has diabetes and its long terms effects being kidney problems she needs (both) for the likelihood that (diabetes) could damage the new kidney.” Muldrow further explained the kidney/pancreas transplant. “This particular transplant would increase Dasia’s success rate because the pancreas would completely get rid of the diabetes." Since Dasia was diagnosed with renal dysplasia when she was 18 months old, she has had to attend - physical therapy sessions to improve her speech and

walking ability. “Dasia has been a little slow developing since she was born prematurely," Muldrow explained. “She has been delayed with talking and walking. She had speech therapy when she was 2, but then she started walking. Now that she is old enough to attend school we want her to be active, strong and more physically able to do things that other kids can do." One significant improvement in medical technology is a cycler machine that Dasia is hooked up to 10 hours during the night and performs her dialysis treatment. Before the machine, Muldrow had to manually give Dasia dialysis four times a day. Although her health has been improving and she was able to attend kindergarten at Key Learning Community (and did not miss one day) where she was learning to

play the violin and piano, she was rcccntU hospitalized. “Dasia had a temperature of 10.'5 and whenever she has a fever 1 have to take her to the hospital and usually they keep her for a couple days," said Muldrow. “Before she can be released, her blood sugar has to be at a particular level and the insulin is working because her blood sugar levels jump all the place." It is Muldrow’s hope that African Americans realize the importance of organ donation, because the lack of donations decreases the chance the survival. Muldrow is in a strange position because in order for Dasia to receive a kidney/ pancreas transplant another young child would have to lose their life. “I am in a abnormal situation because in order for my child to live another child has to die."
