Did you know that house fires in the United States kill more than 5,000 people every year? Most of these deaths are not from burns but from inhaling smoke and other toxic gases. Most household fires start in the kitchen. Unattended cooking and human error account for most fire—not mechanical failure of stoves or ovens. As consumers we spend a lot of time in an area such as the
kitchen, and should be aware of some simple tips that can help in areas of loss prevention and safety. Here are some easy tips on handling a kitchen fire: • Call 911 immediately • Smoother frying-pan fires by covering a lid. Then turn off heat with lid in place until the pan cools. Do not try to carry the pan outside. • Other food fires may be ex-
tinguished with baking soda. Never use water or flour on cooking fires. • Turn off the heat to smother oven or broiler fires and keep the door shut. For more information on these and other loss prevention tips, contact your local Nationwide agent. Nationwide Insurance is “on your side” and is helping you protect your home and family.

Some residents are ready to go. “This place is nasty and I can’t
wait to go,” said Davis.
She complained of the living conditions. As a five-month resident Davis griped of a smoke detector that has been missing from the home for over a month. She also was afraid that her children would come into contact with her furnace because of the missing
lock on the utility door.
