1 6:6

By IMAM MIKAL SAAHIR After watching WTHR Channel 13’s so-called “investigative reporting” on the Islamic

Society of North America (ISNA), I am compelled to reprint the following. Channel 13’s promotion of Steve

Emerson as an

expert, a man who has a history of errantly demoniz-

ing Muslims,

unnecessarily hurts the whole Islamic community of Indiana

and America.

Channel 13’s investigation seemed more like a re-puzzling of sound-bytes to create a perception than actual fair and un-biased reporting. Dr. Syid M. Sayyid has a long history of promoting peace and unity between people of all faiths. The portrayal of him and ISNA as an umbrella organization for terrorism, I believe, is another abuse of the media that plays on the perceived fear of the public. I pray that the following words help to give a truer picture of

Islam. »

Al-Islam, commonly called Islam, is 100 percent against terrorism. The Holy Qur’an speaks directly against terrorism. Additionally the life demonstrated by Muhammed, the Prophet of G-d (God), does not support terrorism. As with the Qur’an, Prophet Muhammed’s life represented peace and unity. Strongly, he worked for those who lived in peace, seeking to protect them from hurt. Even during war he forbade that harm should be done to females, children, the elderly, infirm, and others who were not involved in the battle. Prophet Muhammed and his companions, male and female, endured 13 long years of persecution and abuse from the pagans before G-d instructed Prophet Muhammed to defend their right to worship freely. During those 13 years, the fledging Muslim community received refuge from a Christian nation, Abyssinia, present-day

Ethiopia.

Chapter 22; Verses 39-40: “To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged; and verily, G-d (God) is most powerful for their aid. They are those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, ‘Our Lord

is G-d.’”

This Quranic message is not only to, or for Muslims. Any people of faith who are denied the freedom to worship G-d are

protected under this verse of Qur’an. The verse continues, “Did not G-d check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of G-d is commemorated in abundant measure. G-d will certainly aid those who aid his (cause); for verily G-d is full of strength, exalted in might, (able to enforce his will).” It is important to note that a Muslim cannot destroy another faith’s houses of religion, nor their sacred symbols. Muhammed was not a man given to warfare. He was a man of peace. As he led his men into battle, Prophet Muhammed was careful to heed G-d’s instructions for fighting the enemies of the faithful. He never resorted to terrorist tactics. He was a man fighting, as guided by G-d, to defend the rights of all believers to worship G-d freely. G-d willing, we will review some Quranic verses, and some examples of Prophet Muhammed’s life, that address Islam’s stance against terrorism. The Holy Qur’an is a special book that purposefully addresses all concerns of human life ranging from childbirth, business, education, warfare, prayer, inheritance, and so forth. There is no issue involving human life that is overlooked in the Holy Qur’an. In the Qur’an G-d forbids forcing religion upon individuals. Chapter 2, Verse 256 states, “There is no compulsion in religion.” G-d wants every individual to chose, from their own free will, to serve him. A person compelled is not a true devotee. As the saying goes. “A man changed against his will, is a man of the same mind still.” According to the Qur’an no one can be forced to accept AlIslam. The Holy Qur’an obligates its reader to stand upon truth and justice, even justice for those whom we may be displeased with. “Oh ye who believe. Stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.” Chapter 5, Verse 8. Forgiveness is a constant theme throughout the Qur’an. G-d is well acquainted with the human nature that he created in us. He describes the believers as “Those who avoid the greater crimes and shameful deeds, and, when they are angry even then forgive;” Chapter 42: Verse 37A Muslim, even one at war in battle, is obligated to this verse of the Holy Qur’an. The Muslim is obligated to offer and receive forgiveness, not a commit a •••oaMwauu mohmmuu* auoaHwuu* aaM«aMa«i F.S.H. & Things Boutique a Ladies Appard& Accessories ^ I'Ve specialize in good quality , |L/*/ and customer satisfaction kL\i Sizes8 24 | 3202 Lafayette Rd Suite A f l ] Indianapolis. terrorist act. Fighting in Al-lslam is only allowed under strict restraints. Kindness and justice must be given to everyone, especially those not fighting against you. Chapter 60, Verses 8-9 state, “Allah (G-d) forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just. Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.” It is important to note that Islam means peace. The peace and securit}’ that comes when one gives their will to obey the will of G-d. Therefore, even with one has been denied their rights of freedom of life and religion, Allah tells the believer to not transgress the limits of war. Chapter 2, Verse 190. “Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.” The victims of the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and those in the airplane that crashed in Pennsylvania were innocent. The terrorism inflicted upon the innocent is a clear transgression of those limits. Next to the Holy Qur’an, AlIslam’s second most important source of information is called hadith, a collection of the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammed. One hadith reports the following. “A woman was found among those killed in one of the battles of the prophet, so the messenger of G-i d (Muhammed) forbade the killing of women and children.” Another hadith (reports) that Prophet Muhammed said, “Do ' not kill an old man, nor a child, nor a woman.” It was extremely sad to hear that there were two 11- year-old girls killed in the Pennsylvania plane crash. Prophet Muhammed was not inclined to fighting. He fought only when forced to fight, in a spirit like that of present day defenders of freedom and justice, only to the extent necessary. When peace had been established Prophet Muhammed immediately ceased fighting and established peace. The Holy Qur’an states. Chapter 2, Verse 193, “And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah. But if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression.” To be continued next week We welcome your questions and comments.
