Indianapolis leaders lo pray logelher

For 90 minutes on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 25, leaders from Indianapolis' business, professional and governmental arenas, as well as clergy, will set aside the day’s usual business and focus together on the spiritual side of life. Organizers of the IT 1 ' Annual Indianapolis Prayer Breakfast anticipate an attendance of 400-500 men and women, according to Janice Trierweller, chair of the gathering's organizing committee. This year’s 7:.’30 -9 a.m. breakfast in the Indiana Roof Ballroom features speakers Norm and Bobbe Evans, and special music by Kim Tabor. "Chuck Lofton, wethercaster at WTHR, will serve as master of ceremonies. Norm Evans’ long list of football accomplishments includes two Pro Bowls and three Super Bowls,, NFL Man of the Year while with the Seattle Seahawks, and induction into the Kingdome Hall of Fame. Now a businessman and president of Pro Athletes Outreach, he will talk about thought provoking highlights of his career experience and personal

challenges, while relating the story of his spiritual journey. Sharing the podium with him, his wife Bobbe, known as a dynamic and humorous speaker, adds the woman’s perspective to their story. She has spoken both internationally and around the U.S., including on more than .'30 TV and radio programs. Voclist Kim Tabor, who tours nationally, has also sung on tour with Grammy award-winning artist Sandi Patty. Tabor has recorded two major solo projects: “I Open My Heart” and “It’s Time.” The breakfast will be far more than refreshing content, Trierweiler underlines: its key focus will be what those attending do, as they pray for the city of Indianapolis and its leaders. “Our nation has faced two difficult and challenging years,” comments Trierweiler. “In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and then as we’ve faced war, we’ve seen afresh how we as a nation turned to widespread prayer. Our leaders have requested prayer for themselves and for our nation, and we desire to provide that support for them.”

Miss America Ericka Dunlap announces yearlong speaking lour promoling cultural diversity

Special to The Recorder With Ellis Island as a backdrop, Miss America Ericka Dunlap outlined plans to promote cultural diversity during her year with the crown. Dunlap, 21, who won the title in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last month, said Monday she will take her message of inclusion to children, corporations and communities during her national speaking tour. That includes more than racial and ethnic diversity, said Dunlap, a University of Central Florida student and aspiring lawyer who interrupted her studies to compete for Miss America. “I hope to foster an understanding for people about different cultures ami allow people the opportunity to he comfortable discussing their culture. Diversity isn’t just about race, it’s about age, religion, physical ability, socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity,” she said.

She made her announcement at Ellis Island, in New York City harbor, where thousands of immigrants passed through the immigration processing center in the 19th century and 20th century. “Our country just needs to he a little more accepting, and hopefully III be able to educate people not preach to them _ about how to accept people on a better level," Dunlap said. Dunlap, who is black, said one person urged her in an email mes..agc to stand up for blacks during her term. She sees the job as bigger than that, she said. 'Tm not Miss Black America or Miss Black Whatever," said Dunlap. “I'm Miss America. It’s not my responsibility to only adhere to the issues that deal with that particular race. Especially with my platform being what it is. I’m all for inclusion and I don’t in any way mean to deface or demean the black race. I know what I am, hut I can't spend my year only doing black things or dealing with black-related issues.”
