Ramadan to start this weekend!

\ • l

By IMAM MIKAL SAAHIR With the birth of the new crescent moon at dusk on Saturday will commence the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan. This month is the holiest of months for the Muslim faithful in which every ablebodied Muslim is required to fast, from sunrise to sunset for 30 consecutive days. Allah (G-d) says in the Holy Qur’an, “Oh ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.” (Chapter 2: Verse 183). Before the advent oflslam in 610 AD, believers in G-d observed fasting. The act of fasting is repeatedly mentioned in the New Testament. See Luke 2:37; Acts 14:23; Matthew 17:21; Mark 9:29; and Acts 27:9. One of the major benefits of fasting is the learning howto control one’s appetites and desires. This will strengthen one’s will power enabling them to resist being a victim of the commercial world and succumbing to the influencesof materialism. Allah (Gd) revealed in the Holy Qur’an, “Nothing misleads man more than his appetite unchecked by knowledge." During the fast of Ramadan, the Muslims instead ofeatingand drinking during the daylight hours, instead consume knowledge by reading the Holy Qur’an. It was during the month of Ramadan that Prophet Muhammcd, prayers and peace be on him, that he received the first portion of Quranic revelation. In commemoration of this fact every Muslim seeks to read the entire text of the I loly Qur’an every Ramadan. It is common to have many teen, even pre-teen

I!

youth who have read the entire !; Qur’an from cover to cover numerous times. ■! Allah revealed, via the angel !| Gabriel, “Ramadan is the (month) li in which was sent down the i; Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and l! judgment (between right and >1 wrong). So every one of you who l| is present (at his home) during •• that month should spend it in •’ fasting, but if any one is ill, or on |i; a journey, the prescribed period ;• (shouldbemadeup)bydayslater.” \ (Chapter 2: Verse 185) Y Allah has made Al-Islam easy' > forthebelievers.Hedoesnotwant ‘ to impose hardships on the faith--., ful. Ifone is ill, or becomes ill after ’i beginning his or her fast, they^ should immediately cease fasting j j until their health improves. Allah is the merciful benefactor and the j’ merciful redeemer. His throne^ (authority) rests upon the rule of;! mercy. ‘j We encourage all of our Christian and Jewish friends to join us ^

in the spirit of fasting during this month of Ramadan. I n 2001 Pope > John Paul II invited the Roman)’ Catholic Church to join with the!,’ Muslims by fasting the last day ofb Ramadan. The responses by the! • members of the church was enlightening and unifying of our spirits. Whether Ramadan begins Saturday or Sunday will be determined by the sighting of the new ■* moon, and will continue for 29 or :« 30 days until the next sighting of > the new moon. We pray that Allah bless each and everyone who 4
