An Invitation to celebrate all parents (PART 2)

By IMAM MIKAL SAAHIR

Last week AlIslam in America sent an open invitation for everyone to attend our 11th Annual Parents Appreciation Banquet which will be held at Martin University in the beautiful Gathertorium. The date and time is Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The host is Nur-Allah Islamic Center. The purpose of this occasion is to honor and recognize the special blessings we have in our parents, and to show our appreciation for their years of sacrifice, guidance, and love they freely gave for our well being. The keynote speaker will be Imam W. Deen Mohammed, the son of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the leader of over 2 million American Muslims in the United States and the Caribbean. The guest speaker will be the honorable Dr. Jacqueline Greenwood, the principal of Arlington High School This is a time and occasion for people of all faiths to unite and honor parents. As Muslims it is of utmost importance that everyday we honor our parents and the sacred role of parenting. Please join us Oct. 11 for our Annual Parent Appreciation banquet at Martin University. May we remind you that this affair recognizes all parents regardless of their faith traditions. Allah (G-d) does not allow Muslims to avoid or put down their parents because their parent may be Christian or Jewish. All parents, living and deceased are recognized, appreciated, and loved at this gathering. Tickets are available at the Nur-Allah Islamic Center. The cost is $35 per person and $65 for couples. Tickets for college students (ages 1725) as well as youth 12 years

and younger cost $20. Proceeds go to the Nur-Allah Islamic Center’s weekend school and other Islamic propagation. For more information call (317) 549-2814. This week, as promised, AlIslam in America wishes to share with you some Quranic verses and hadiths (reports of the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammed). The best model for living an Islamic life was demonstrated by Prophet Muhammed, prayers and peace be on him, and the best book that describes an Islamic life is the Holy Qur’an. Below are a few quotes from the Holy Qur’an and some hadiths on the importance of parents. The chapter and verse of each Quranic quote are in [brackets]. • A hadith reports that the prophet said, “The great sins are (1) to join others as partners in worship with Allah (Gd), (2) to murder a human being, (3) to be undutiful to one’s parents (4) and to make a false statement.” • “Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: “My Lord! bestow on them thy mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.” [17: 23-24] • “...Out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: “My Lord! bestow on them thy mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.” • “And remember we took a covenant from the children of Israel (to this effect): Worship none but God; treat with kindness your parents and kindred.” [2- 83] • “Say: ‘Come, I will rehearse what God hath (really) prohibited you from’: Join not anything as equal with him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want; we provide sustenance for you and for them; come

not nigh to shameful deeds.” [6.151] • “Oh our Lord! cover (us) with thy forgiveness - me, my parents, and (all) believers, on the day that the reckoning will be established!” [14-41] • “We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not...” [29-8] • “And we have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), ‘Show gratitude to me and to thy parents: to me is (thy final) goal.’” [31-14] • “We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) 30 months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains 40 years, he says, ‘Oh my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for thy favor which thou has bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to thee and truly do I bow (to thee) in Islam.’” [4615] • “O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong-doers grant thou no increase but in perdition!” [71-28] Thank you for reading these few quotes about parents and parenting. We hope to see you at our ll ,h Parents Appreciation banquet at Martin University. We welcome your questions and comments. Please forward them to Al-Islam in America, c/o Imam Mikal Saahir; NurAllah Islamic Center; 2040 E. 46th St, Indianapolis, IN. or via e-mail: [email protected]
