This will provide the absolute best patient care available for women in Central Indiana." By the fall of JOOt, the new 217.000 square foot facility will be capable »»fdeliv(‘rinj>; more than 5.000 babies per year, bast year, St. Vincent’s delivered 1,500 babies and the Women’s Hospital delivered about 2,000 babies, according to Caponi. The final plans for the expansion have not yet been determined.
“We will vv< >rk very closely with physicians, nurses and other clinicians who will practice at the hospital to ensure we are using our resources in the best possible way to maximize patient care," said Caponi. As a member of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic not-for-profit health care organization in the nation, St. Vincent Women’s I lospital will follow the ethical and religious directives of the Catholic Church. Because of this, tubal ligation, a surgical sterilization, will not he performed. According to Caponi, the Women's Hospital performs 12 to 15 such procedures a month and although women will not be
able to have the procedure at St. Vincent’s Women’s I lospital, they can schedule an appointment next door at the independent surgical center. The Women’s I lospital has also been associated with fertility treatment, but that part of the hospital was bought by a group of physicians about six years ago. These particular services at Women’s Physicians Surgery Center will not be affected because it was not a part of St. Vincent's purchase. Clwen Sandefur, who will be St. Vincent Women’s Hospital interim administrator said no reductions in staff are planned at either hospital.
► Continued from Page 1 will work with local and state governments toensure thatcharter schools around the state are equally represented. “Ron C.ibson is the right person with theexperience and commitment to lead the state association,” said Mayor Bart Peterson. "His positive, cooperative approach to finding solutions and building community support has really made a difference in providing parents with new public school choices in Indianapolis. In his new capacity, I know Ron will bringthatsame commitment statewide.” Charter schools are an alternative to traditional public education. Charter schools are not private schools; they are funded
by taxpayers. Children who attend charter schools do not pay tuition. Each charter school selects its own board of directors to lead the school. According to Gibson, there will be about 1,300 students in the state’s 17 charter schools. The Charter School Association of Indiana is made up of a group of charter school leaders, business leaders and politicians, Gibson said. His annual salary is $85,000 and is paid by the association. The association was founded last October. Its membership includes all 17 charter schools, charter school sponsors, neighborhood leaders, researchers and business leaders.
Cynthia Diamond, chair of the Charter School Association of Indiana, said, “The selection of someone of Ron Gibson’s caliber is beyond my loftiest hopes.” “I am so excited at the opportunity (for) to work on expanding the number of charter schools throughout Indiana and to work each day to help them succeed,” said Gibson. Gibson, a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University, said he believed his drive for quality education is a reflection of his experience in the public education system. "Without the opportunity for an outstanding public education, I would not be where I am today,” he said.
