Celebrafe Junefeenfh af Children's Museum
Special to Tho Racordar The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will hold its Juneteenth Jamboree, now in its 16 th year, June 14, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Juneteenth serves as the oldest observance of slaves’ emancipation. The Juneteenth Jamboree is a free festival, celebrated on Festival Park, located outside the museum's main entrance. How-
ever, the museum will be open at the regular admission price. The Juneteenth tradition has come to signify an opportunity to encourage self-development for all cultures. It is seen as a time to reaffirm the universal principles of freedom and justice for all. Juneteenth began in 1865, when Union Army soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and that all slaves were free.
Though President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had become official two and a half years earlier, the resistance in Texas was not overcome until the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the arrival of Granger’s regiment. Activities for children and adults throughout the day include ice cream making, balloon tosses and face painting. Vendors from minority-owned businesses will have merchandise for sale. Tradi-
tional ethnic food will be available for a small fee. There will be entertainment throughout the day, as follows: 10 a.m. - Opening hosted by Martin R. Delaney (Khabir Shareef) 10:30 a.m. - Indy Youth Choir “ Jesus Clang" 11:30 a.m. - MulTink / libada Praise dancer 12:30 p.m. - Salem Baptist Church of Champaign, III. 1:30 p.m. - Indy Metro Youth
