Warren Central High School senior Tyree Pollard is congratulated by J. P. Smith, a counselor in the school's Counseling Services Center. Pollard participated in the WC STARS (Students Teaching & Reaching Students) Program as a Little Brother, during his freshman year. STARS is a mentor/tutor program that allows seniors the chance to work with freshmen. STARS also provides students with the opportunity to participate in community service activities. Pollard will attend Toledo University on a football scholarship. His major will be in business with plans of becoming a C.P.A.
Students can take part in Art in Motion school program
This May, the streets of'Indianapoiis will he decorated with elaborately painted and sculpted racecars through Art in Motion, a special-event art program, organized by the 500 Festival. Fihh Third Hank will be the title sponsor of the Art in Motion school program, in which areaschool art classes will have the opportunity to participate in this art initiative that celebrates motor racing and showcases the arts in Indiana. Art in Motion is a statewide initiative designed to celebrate the world’s foremost racingevent, the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. The program showcases artists, promotes tourism, partnerships and further supports culture and art education in Indiana. The school program replaces the former Festival of Art this year only yet. allows schools to join the celebration of the arts and the Indianapolis 500.
More than 450 invitations to participate in the Art in Motion school program were sent to schools in Marion and surrounding counties. Schools are encouraged to participate by launching individual design competitions within each school. Any Central 1 ndiana student between the ages of 10 and 18 can submit a design with the chance to become his or her school’s official entry. “Firth Third Bank has always been a great supporter of the 500 Festival,” said Mary Clare Bn ladbcnt, chairman of this year's 500 Festival Board of Directors. “Their gift makes it possible for art students to participate in one of the most exciting projects the festival has organized.” Any school wishing to participate should contact Mainly Baker at the 500 Festival,(.117) 6l4-(il3 or at: mhaker(<r500festival.com. A young soloist, who went through a two-week workshop on gospel music along with the rest of the student body, sings to the crowd during New Augusta Public Academy South's concert celebrating African Americans.
Marian C. McKinnie, a local musician/clinician and guest choral director conducted the workshop on gospel music. She addressed the crowd during the all school performance which was held at Pike Performing Arts Center.
Grades K-5 students performed a concert titled, "Discovering Your Soul Within." The performance was in honor of Black History Month and the students sang songs such as, "My Country Tis of Thee," "He’s All Around Me,” and "Potter and the Clay." (Photos/J. Hurst)
