WAR ► Continued from Page 1 -eluded on our currency, and we often use the phrase, ‘God Bless America,’ but we seem to have lost a lot of our spiritual heritance,” Rowan said. Dr. David Moller, a professor of foundation of social theory at Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), explained his sentiments about the possibility of war. “I am troubled by the enthusiasm with which the present administration has pursued plans for war,” he said. “War, because it is so horrible, must always be a last recourse. All options must be exhausted before war can morally be pursued and engaged.” This has not happened, casting great doubt in my mind about the moral legitimacy of war with Iraq at this point,” Moller said. “And it makes me suspicious of the motives of those who are eagerly promoting war as a solution to the Iraqi problem.” Self-employed Frederick Hopkins disagrees with Rowan and Moller. “I believe the United States is not in the best situation, as far as support from the United Nations (Security Council),” he pointed out. “However, I do feel that we have to deal with this someone (Hussein), who is clearly a dictator, with evilness about him.” Hopkins said, “All through history, dictators such as Fidel Castro
and Adolph H itler have oppressed their people, defeating any hope for democracy. And, as far as the economy is concerned, if we do not go to war after deploying all the military personnel for this mission, the morale of the country, as well as the budget will suffer.” Cherri Peate questions the real state of the economy, and also President Bush’s concern for his people. “If there is so much money to finance a war, why is our economy suffering,” the IUPUI student asked. “Further, I do not feel as though the president has taken into consideration the sentiment of the American people, although he is supposed to represent us. War is definitely not an option for me, because I believe there is a much better solution.” Bishop Randall Sheppard, pastor of Guiding Light Church Assembly, paralleled what Peate said. “I do not think that war, at this time, is necessary, and I do not see that Saddam Hussein has done anything to validate a \#ar on Iraq,” he voiced. “But more importantly, I believe that more people, who profess to be Christians, should be praying concerning this global matter.” Sheppard is also the deputy assessor for Pike Township. Comments from famed civil rights activist Tavis Smiley address some crucial points. Speaking on the syndicated Tom Joyner Radio program, Smiley said that it is all right to be patriotic, but
and that the leaders (other than Bush, Powell and Condoleezza Rice) in Washington are sitting silently by waiting for this war to happen. And I cannot believe this!" However, there are other issues that local business owner Robert Bell is concerned with. “If I raq poses such a serious terrorist threat to the United States, then I can agree with addressing this matter,” he commented. “But I am confused about why our country has not taken action against terrorists out ofcountries like Iran and Saudi Arabia. It is like the focus is just on Iraq.” Bell wondered, “And is President Bush finishing his father’s business? If not, is the entire intervention based on control of the oil fields? Well, my belief is simple - just follow the money, because that is the trail that our government is taking.” NAACP meetings

Hacker accessed 7,000 patient files at 111 s eep clinic
(AP) — Patients at an Indiana University sleep clinic now have another reason to be losing sleep: a computer hacker may have gained access to their personal information. IU School of Medicine officials said the hacker broke into a clinic computer, downloading Social Security numbers, dates of birth and other sensitive information of at least 7,000 patients. Patients at the Center for Sleep Disorders are now being urged to keep a close eye on their credit reports to check for signs of identity theft. University officials said an automated probe slipped into a computer at the Indianapolis center in late November after new software was installed. The hacker may have wandered around the center’s files, which contain sensitive information such as names, Social Security numbers, home addresses and dates of birth. University officials have notified the 7,000 patients who have attended the sleep center in the past 14 years. While the hacker’s program was able to roam through patient identification files, it was not able to gain access to detailed medical information. IU School of Medicine spokesman Joe Stuteville said the university has no evidence any identities were stolen or even that the hacker downloaded any files. After learning of the breach, the university notified the FBI and removed the affected computer from the university network. The sleep center incident is the third breach of IU’s cyber systems in more than two years. In the two previous instances, both in 2001, hackers accessed personal information of about 5,000 current or former students.
