Why do you have the desire to
teach?
“I relish the opportunity to help someone learn and experience new and exciting things. My only avenue for achieving this and reaching as many people as I could was through teaching. After 33.5 years of teaching, I am still as exuberant about my job as I was on my first day, that
many years ago.”
What is the most rewarding thing you’ve experienced as a teacher.
“Whenever a student understands a concept, interprets it, and makes a practical application; the illumination that appears in his or her eyes makes me feel as if I have unlocked a chamber of knowledge for that child’s future. It does not matter if it is understanding a soliloquy from Shakespeare, contrasting physical or chemical changes, or the solution to a multi-step math problem; I then know I have accomplished my goal. I have im-
pacted a life in a positive way.”
What has been the most challenging aspect of
teaching?
“WTien I hear the imbalanced attacks about public education in the news media, I want to have a venue to tell “the whole story” and nothing but “the whole story”. Educating non practitioners of education as to what the reality of teaching involves is very frustrating to so many people. We have to educate the masses and many of our students do quite well, but the “good” news is not
reported as equitable as the disturbing news. There is always room for improvement and room to improve. We do not want our students to grow up and become mendicants; we want them to fare well.” In the future, what changes would you like to see in schools? “Our students are inundated with non-aca-demic burdens. A high percentage of classroom teachers are not educated to handle the multitude of societal issues we face from day to day. Our professional training did not equip us with a broad stroke of skills to address the ills of the world; however, we do teach all subject areas. Each school in America needs a counselor, a registered nurse, a social worker, smaller class sizes, and equitable professional pay. I hope these changes are made soon, then and only then, will we leave no child behind.”
