Gospel will glisl'en during Black History celebration
Sptclal to Tho Recorder Gospel music has exploded in the past few years. In fact, nearly 50 million Christian music albums were sold in 2001, a 12 percent increase from 2000. According to a recent Gallup poll, “78 percent of Americans feel the need to experience spiritual growth.” Connecting the dots between the old and the new is the At-lanta-based Gospel Heritage Foundation (GHF). The mission of the GHF is to perpetuate the culture and preserve the legacy of America’s gospel heritage. Thanks to a powerful board of national gospel industry and ministry leaders, the GHF says it
is planning to host one of the most exciting and informative events in the genre. The 2nd annual Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference will be Feb. 20-22 at the New Birth Cathedral, in Decatur, Ga., where Bishop F.ddie Long is pastor. The multi-faceted event will include top gospel artists, music industry experts, experienced worship leaders and phenomenal ministers. Classes, seminars and roundtables will be the focus of daytime activities, highlighted by showcases for aspiring artists and praise dancers. Evening activities will feature the Gospel Heritage Awards & Concert Gala; a “live” recording session; and a special closing celebration — “Hopeville” — the
hottest and highest grossing tour in gospel, featuring gold and platinum artists, Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin, and the top-selling gospel artist in the world, Kirk Franklin. The conference is also suitable for college and high school students. A special “Youth Division" will featu re national speakers and artists to inspire young people toward positive goals. An exciting “Youth & Choir Competition” will offer cash prizes (sponsored by Profectiv Hair company) to the top three placing choirs. Here’s a day-by-day look at the conference Feb. 20 Richard Smallwood, a top gospel composer, and Vickie
Winans, perhaps the most vivacious female in gospel music, will present unique one-on-one afternoon sessions. That evening, the Gospel Heritage Awards will occupy center stage, honoring legends in gospel including Dottie Peoples, radio pioneer Irene Ware, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and the convention launched by Thomas A. Dorsey, the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. Past recipients have included Bishop T. D. Jakes, Andrae Crouch, Albertina Walker, Dr. Bobby Jones, Shirley Caesar and Kirk Franklin. Feb. 21 Seminars and classes will dominate the day with special sessions orchestrated for entre-
preneurs. The annual industry luncheon will be the best networking opportunity of the workshop, accented by Alvin Slaughter and Maurette Brown Clark. One of the most admired ministers in the genre, Marvin Sapp, will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon. A “live” recording session, sponsored by Verity Records, the largest gospel label, will highlight talents from around the country. The session will be produced by award-winning producer, Kevin Bond. Feb. 22 Bishop Andrew Merritt, pastor of the Straight Gate Church of Detroit will be the keynote speaker for the morning “Prayer & Praise” Session. Merritt is not
only a mega-church pastor, but is the president of Bajada Records, a church-based label that is indicative of this hot new trend in gospel. Merritt will be joined by Vanessa Williams, an artist on his label. Although the conference officially closes Saturday afternoon, a special event on Saturday evening will feature the most dynamic tour to hit gospel, the “Hopeville” tour. Registration is required to at-, tend all daytime sessions. Church groups are invited to participate. Thursday and Friday eveningsessions are open to the public. For registration information, contact Treiva Williams at info@ gospelheritagefoundation.org or visit the Web site at gospelheritagefoundation.org.
