KING
► Continued from Page 1 who is educated does not (necessarily) have good sense, which is really important these days," he charge^!. “We need to start educating ourselves, and get our children reconnected, without some task force to study us. We’ve got many educated politicians who cannot balance a billion dollar budget. In the hood, there are people that can do more with $20, than they (the politicians) can do with all that money. “We as Black people can move upward, but we cannot do this alone. White people cannot do this alone, and neither can any one people do this alone. It will take God stitching us all together to move upward." During an exclusive interview with The Recorder, Dr. King said: “I did not realize until my early 20s that I was blessed and favored to have been born into the family I was in. I was just a kid, a preacher’s son. And preachers’ kids had different behavior expectations than kids who were in families where their parents were the lay in a worship community, are not even members of a household of faith. When I got older, I realized what it meant to be a King, and I have been proud of that ever since.” Elder Charles A. Sheppard, pastor of FFWB, said of the program: “It feels like we have a
part of history," he said. Although he is not Dr. Martin Luther King, he is part of the heritage embodied by Dr. Martin Luther King. It is an honor to know that the tree has produced fruit, and that the fruit just lives on.” Mason spoke about the program that she was very excited at the turnout, as well as the program itself. Evangelist Hester added to the senice with her ministry of song, and Dr. King capped it off by drawing how we shall overcome into the word of God. Reeves agreed with Elder Sheppard and Mason about the effectiveness of the message. “Dr. (Derek) King embodies the dream that Dr. (Martin Luther King Jr.) had for our people,” stated Reeves. “And he firmly believes that we can help ourselves, and stop waiting for handouts. This message today was enjoyable, and it touched a lot of people, because it had a family feel.” Dr. King, father of two sons and instructor of religious studies at Martin University, says he does believe in his late uncle’s dream. “Yes, I do believe in it,” he noted. “Maybe it will not be in my lifetime, but that is my hope, and I will not let anyone take away my hope. “We will overcome, because God is a God of justice. And he continues to make his presence known in human affairs, as it relates to the injustice inflicted upon his children.”

► Continued from Page 1 King once per year and say, “You are my friend.” Racism is an institutional phenomenon. It is more than personal prejudice or bias. Racism requires institutional power to enforce prejudice and biases. The history of Blacks in Americahighlights that Blacks were thought to be inferior and whites had the power to enforce inferiority in eveiy aspect of American society. The view is so ingrained, we don’t even recognize it. Whites argue, “I didn’t own slaves, I never discriminated.” But because racism is about institutionalized power and privilege, if you benefit from being white, you benefit from racism and in effect by definition are racist... so while Blacks may be prejudiced or even bigoted, they do not have the power to be racist. We have come a long way, but you must admit, we still have a long way to go. Why we still can’t wait? Because Trent Lott once the most powerful politician in the country embarrassed us all. Why we still can’t wait? Because President Bush is still trying to put an anticivil rights judge on the Supreme Court? Why we can’t wait? Because the suburbs are too white and the ghetto is too Black. Why we can’t wait? Because the corporate boardrooms are too white and inner city schools are too Black. Why we still can’t wait? Because this room is too white and I am too Black. Why we still can’t wait? Because we should not have been on the “waiting list” to begin with. We should not wait because we have been waiting for .'300 years. We.should not wait because every moment we delay, we deny our destiny its a great nation. All of us want Lady Liberty to hold her torch high. So you can see the urgency of now because the fact of the matter is that you can’t wait
and neither can I. Dr. King used to say it this way: “What affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to he until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.” Dr. King’s dream cannot wait. The clock of destiny is ticking out. In many ways it is a matter of life or death. I close with his words once again from the Lincoln Memorial when he delivered his “1 Have a Dream” speech. In that speech, he outlined “why we can’t wait.” In case you have not read it or heard it, it can be summed up with just one line that we cannot ignore: “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish as fools.” That’s the bottom line. That’s why we still can’t wait! Everyday on the plains of the Serengeti of East Africa a lion wakes up and starts running. If he does not run, he does not eat. Everyday a gazelle wakes up and starts running. If she doesn’t run, then she dies. The moral of this story: whether you are a lion or a gazelle, wake up and start running because none of us can afford to wait. Remember, “you are the salt of the Earth and the light of the world”... make a difference ...you really can. JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli geologists said this week they have examined a stone tablet detailing repair plans for the Jewish Temple of King Solomon that, ifauthentieated. would be a rare piece of phy sical evidence confirming biblical narrative. The find - whose origin is murky - is about the size of a legal pad, with a 15-line inscription in ancient I lebrew that resembles descriptions in the Bible’s Book of Kings. It could also strengthen Jewish claims to a disputed holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City that is now home to two major mosques. Muslim clerics insist, despite overwhelming archaeological evidence, that no Jewish shrine ever stood at the site. That claim was made by Palestinian officials in failed negotiations with Israel in 2000 over who would
be sovereign there. The origin of the stone tablet is unclear, making it difficult to establish authenticity. The Israeli daily llaaret/ quoted an unidentified source as saying it was uncovered in recent years, during renovations carried out by the Muslim administrators of the mosque compound known to Muslims as the I laram as-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, and to Jews .is the Temple Mount. From there, it reached a major antiquities collector in Jerusalem, Haaretz said. The I loly Land has a thriving trade in antiquities, often operating on the edge of the law. The sandstone tablet’s inscription resembles descriptions in Kings 11,12:l-(», 11-17,said Israel's Geological Survey, which examined the artifact. The words refer to King Joash, who ruled the area 2,800 years ago.
