Mari Evans to speak at Butler African-American poet Mari Evans will speak at Butler University on Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Robertson Hall Johnson Room at 7:30 p.m. Her visit to the campus is part of Butler's spring visiting writers series. Evans is an educator, writer and musician and resides in Indianapolis. Formerly a distinguished writer and assistant professor at Cornell Uni /ersity, during the past 20 years she has also taught at Indiana University, Purdue University, the University of Miami and Spelman College. Evans has written numerous articles and children's books, several performed theater pieces, two musicals and four volumes of poetry, including I Am a Black Woman, Niqhtstar anti A Dark & Splendid Mass. She also edited the highly acclaimed Black Women Writers (1950-1980): A Critical Evaluation. Known for her concise writing and sharp wit, Evans, 78, often writes about day-to-day life as an African American. The program is free and open to the public. Historic Landmarks seeks volunteer tour guides Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana is recruiting volunteers to lead entertaining and educational walking and motorcoach tours in Indianapolis that highlight the city's historic architecture, history, and recent developments. People interested in learning more about the heritage tourism program and tour guide opportunities are invited to a tea-time gathering on Feb. 5, 4-6 p.m. The gathering will be held at Historic Landmarks' headquarters, 340 W.

Young Actors Theatre to do ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ The fall semester drama classes of Young Actors Theatre, a not-for-profit organization, will present the children's classic "Jack and the Beanstalk” during two weekends in January.
