Poet John Sherman featured From Jay County, Indiana, to Nigeria and Biafra, Africa, poet/writer/photographer John Sherman has documented the lives and history of people and places through poetry, story and photography. Sherman, author of three books of poetry and two books of photography has recently published War Stories: A Memoir of Nigeria and Biafra. Sherman will share selections from his book America Is a Negro Child: Race Poems on Jan. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at Abbey Coffeehouse, 923 Indiana Ave., Lockefield Commons IUPUI Strip Mall. Free admission. Free jazz concert The BWJO Jazz Sextet, led by Mark Buselli, will present a free concert in North United Methodist Church, 38 ,h and North Meridian streets, on Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. Dare to Breathe to perform at U of I Dare to Breathe, an eclectic a cappella guintet that has won acclaim and affection throughout Minnesota for its innovative, dynamic programs, will present a free concert at the University of Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan, 17 in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. The classically trained musicians perform from a vast repertoire that spans the globe and eight centuries. The group is heard regularly on Minnesota Public Radio, performs 50 to 60 shows annually in the Midwest, and has recorded several CDs. The St. Paul-based guintet recently
received a $25,000 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists. For more information, call (317) 788-2135. ‘Praying for Rain’ coming to Phoenix Continuing its support of new plays for the Indianapolis community, the Phoenix Theatre will present the Indiana premiere of playwright Robert Lewis Vaughn's "Praying for Rain" as its first production of 2003. The production will run Thursday through Sunday from Jan. 23 to Feb. 16. Tickets are $22.50 for those 25 and over, $10 for those 24 and under. Twenty tickets per performance will be available free for those aged 13 to 19 as part of the League of Indianapolis Theatre's Free Ticket February program. DVD magazine deal OKd Music Video Distributors, the second leading producer of Music DVDs in 2001, has sealed a deal with Yellow Tape Film and Video Productions, the originator of the "Urban Video Magazine" concept, to release a quarterly DVD magazine of live interviews and performance footage to consumers. Each DVD will contain interviews with the hottest personalities in hip-hop, with the first release featuring an exclusive interview with Suge Knight. The DVD will have a retail price of $16.95 and the first issue will be released Jan. 28.
