The Big Ten Conference issued Coach Davis a public reprimand. Davis also will write a letter of apology to the three officials who worked

Davis sat out the I loosiers' Dec. .'11 game at Ball State. Associate head coach .John Trcloar directed the I loosiers against theCardinals. The Big Ten Conference notified III Dec. 2:5 that it believed coach Davis was in violation of the league's sportsman-like conduct agreement and asked the university to respond. 1U responded on Dec. 27. recommending to the league office Davis be issued a public reprimand, a onegame suspension, and write a letter of apology to the officials. The BigTen announced Monday that it concurred with the university's recommended sanctions. "We appreciate the careful consideration that the Big Ten has

given to this matter," IU interim athletics director Terry Clapacs said. "I am fully supportive ot’M ike and the job he is doing for his team and for Indiana University. ' I've discussed this matterwith Mike over the past few days, and 1 know he is genuinely sorry for his actions during the IndianaKentuekv game. Mike’s actions at
the end of the game occurred because of his intensity at the moment and are not representative ofthe person 1 have come to know over the years." After the Ball State game. Indiana hosts Charlotte on Jan. 4 before Penn State visits Bloomington in the Jan. 8 Big Ten Conference opener.

UCLA hires Black coach The Black Coaches Association (BCA) applauded the University of California Los Angeles for the recent hiring of Karl Dorrell as the new head football coach. Dorrell is the first minority to fill a vacant Division 1A football head coaching position for the 2003 season. Although profits from basketball are down. it is still the biggest IHSAA moneymaker among the girls sports and second only to football for boy s. Overall, in 2000-01. the last school year for which complete figures are available, the IHSAA netted 8288.77:5 from its girls tournament series - showing profits in basketball, volleyball, softball. soccer and sw imming and losses from track and field, gymnastics, tennis, cross countrv and golf. I he associat ion netted 81.181,117 from its boy s tournaments - with profits in football, basketball, wrestlmg. baseball, soecei. track and field and sw imming, and losses from tennis, cross country and golf. Ress has no immediate plans for retirement, although he and his wife, Linda, an elementary school principal in N'oblesville, are looking forward to 'pending more time with then family. They have three grown children and three grandchildren. "I basically tell her.
