► Continued from Page 1 None of this bodes well for these boys’ long-term prospects either, with the authors stating that “about 75 percent of Afri-can-American students are not employed two years out of school. Slightly more than half are still not employed 3 to 5 years out of school. In thissame time, the arrest rate for African Americans with disabilities is 40 percent." Thus, it is apparent that there is a high “likelihood” that Black kids dubbed retarded or discipline problems will “eventually wind up in correctional facilities.” Many states work hard to hide

this dirty little secret, so it wasn’t easy for Losen and Orfield to unearth the damning data to make their illuminating case for an immediate overhaul. Much of the information, they claim, was “made available only through the process of legal discovery in a class action lawsuit” Nowthatthecat’sfinallyout of the bag, let’s hope for systematic reform which will truly address rather than abandon those Black children in dire need of an adequate education in order to avoid the likelihood of incarceration.

TIm Children’s Museum Cclebnte the rich traditions of Kwanzas that commemorate the African harvest and values. Wton will enjoy musk, storytelling and craft idea workshops designed to help make family celebrations complete.

Devon also goes toe-to-toe with Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), the band’s demanding director, who threatens suspension after learning the lad can’t read music. Then there’s sexual tension with lovely Laila (Zoe Saldana), thebourgycheerleaderhe wants to date. Even the school’s president (Afeno Omilami) gets into the act, wanting the showboat to help win the $100,000 grand prize in the annual battle of the bands. Along the way to the big showdown, Devon finds love and learns valuable lessons about honesty, hard work and cooperation. Hie kind of heartwarming called for during this cold holiday season.
