Coppin Chapel AME receives grant
Special to Th« Recorder Mayor Bart Peterson has presented a neighborhood action grant to Rev. Bridget Black of Coppin Chapel AME Church. The congregation will use proceeds to implement a technology assisted after school enrichment program for Crown Hill Neighborhood youth. Neighborhood action grants aid community organizations in their efforts to improve Indianapolis neighborhoods. Grant funding comes from the
Department of Metropolitan Development and the Health and Hospital Corp. The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) awards grants from $500 to $5,000 quarterly for projects in five categories: cultural, security, beautification, recreation and family and youth issues. To date, GIPC has awarded 516 grants totaling more than $1.3 million to Indianapolis community organizations.
KING
► Continued from Page 1 munity that exuded great pride and progress for African Americans, and I feel that restoring the parsonage will be one of the critical links in the ultimate revitalization of that area,” Thurman told The Montgomery Advertiser for a story. Thurman, who has led the congregation for the last six years, is the only pastor of the church who has not lived in the parsonage since the congregation purchased it in 1919. Thomas McPherson, vice president of the foundation, said the entire structure will be restored to its former glory. The foundation has received a $240,000community development block grant from the city and $70,000 in donations from members of the church. The Alabama Historical Commission also has contributed $50,000 to the project, McPherson added. McPherson said all of the original furniture that was in
the King family’s living room, dining room, bedroom and kitchen will be refinished and reupholstered to its original state. “We believe we have a historical treasure here that should be preserved to provide educational and inspirational guidance to young people and tourists who come to the city,” he said. “It will be a living history of the life, teachings and family experiences of Dr. King and his family.” King and his family lived in the parsonage from 1954 to I960 while he served as pastor of what was then Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. It would be the first and only church to have King as senior pastor. King’s home was bombed by segregationists on Jan. 31, 1956. King’s wife, Coretta, his youngdaughter, Yolanda, and a church member were inside at the time. No one was injured, but King later had to calm an angry crowd ready to avenge the incident.
AL-ISLAM ► Continued from Page 1 fore Allah (G-d) directed Muhammed to read that which had been created. “Read, with the name of your Lord, who created. Created (the thinking) man from congealed blood...” The education of Prophet Muhammed, therefore humanity, is the study of G-d’s creation. As with all institutions of higher learning, Martin University offers access for its students to study G-d’s creation. I saw each class as the farmer sees one ofhis many fields, as a place to harvest the knowledge planted in each class setting. Why not? According to the words of Prophet Muhammed, it was my lost property. With that belief in mind each class session became an opportunity for me. Sort of like an educational lost-and-found. “But teach (thy message) for teaching benefits the believers.” (Chapter 51: Verse 55 titled AzZariyat, The Winds that Scatter) One of the specialties of Martin University is its incorporation of adult learning methodology applied in each class. As an imam at a local mosque in Indianapolis often I found myself invited to class rooms to share information and answer questions about Islam. As I was trying to absorb every possible drop of education within the walls ofMartin University, I had to share the knowledge that G-d had blessed me to receive as a Muslim. As a student who had received special training as an imam, I had to teach what I knew as it related to the course. As a columnist for The Indianapolis Recorder, often it was expected of me that I would use and share my adult learning as a writer with my classmates. These expectations compounded by the strong family
setting of Martin University planted deep into my mind and soul a love for this institution of higher learning - a love I had not felt for a school since the elementary education I received at Indianapolis Public School 44. Another Qur’anic example involving education that reminds me ofMartin University is the four opening verses of chapter 80, titled “He Frowned!” God revealed in Verses 1-4 “(The Prophet) frowned and turned away; because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)? Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?” Prophet Muhammed, in his hurry to meet with some important people in Mecca hurriedly brushed past a blind man who sincerely was seeking advice from the Prophet In the above verse G-d admonished Prophet Muhammed to never pass by the seemingly insignificant person who is sincerely seeking education in preference to those who are already established in life. Thereafter Prophet Muhammed always kept the blind man in his company. Throughout my sojourn at Martin University I repeatedly witnessed an institution that would not hurriedly brush past the blind in society. I witnessed an educational family that had stopped to teach the blind (uneducated) the knowledge G-d had blessed them with. I would like to thank the institution for helping me come to the end of my journey when I will graduate next month. We welcome your questions and comments. Please forward them to Al-Islam in America, c/ o Imam Mikal Saahir; Nur-Al-lah Islamic Center; 2040 E. 46 th St, Indianapolis, IN. or via email: [email protected].
