Melba Moore*s first gospel CD stresses godly virtues

Broadway diva Melba Moore’s national tour "Sweet Songs of the Soul” has culminated in her first gospel CD, "fin Still Here,” scheduled for release in February. Four years on the road, "Sweet Songs of the Soul” is Moore’s one-woman production that weaves storytelling and a variety of music with a positive message. The CD, written and produced by Shirley Murdock and Dale Degrot, continues the message. Moore came to Dallas in November in support of the St.

GOSPEL MUSIC

Philip’s School and Community Center annual fund raiser by performing “An Evening with Melba Moore.” She also sang during morning worship services at St Luke Community United Methodist Church. Music lovers were treated to her signature songs, “Lean on Me’ and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” as well as selections from her upcoming CD. Moore said the effort for St. Philip’s was in tandem with her personal mission to be both that positive role model and to demonstrate successful business acumen. Being a positive role model for youth

\

Singer-actress Melba Moore wants to be role model to young people. is what touches her, Moore said. DeJoyce Morgan, St Philip’s community development director, said Moore was well received. As part ofher trip, Moore did a question and answer session with sixth-grade students for airing on the Esther Davis’ show on PAX TV. “For those who know and

understand her story, she is an example of perseverance and overcoming, and that is clearly what happens for St. Philips in this community and for many of the families we serve,” said Terry Flowers, the school’s headmaster. “She exhibit^, as the gospel song says, someone who has ‘Fell Down and Got

Up”

Through Curtis King and the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the “Sweet Songs” tour was her link to Dallas. Shesaid that’s how she learned of St. Philip’s and the success of its youth and outreach programs. “You have to get to young people before they get to the age of reason,” she said. “After that, you cannot argue with

them. You can only provide a positive alternative.” Moore said that she thought the murderofJason Mizell, Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC, and its news coverage demonstrated that the hip-hop industry promotes a negative example for youth, even covertly sometimes since Mizell himself did not lead

a violent life.

Because the gospel music industry is growing, Moore recorded the CD and was a part of another gospel project important to her, she said. “We’re in a period of hunger, with a need for truth and godly virtues,” she said. Moore plays asupportingrole in the upcoming film, “The Fighting Temptations.” The

story sees a hip-hop producer traveling back to his hometown in Alabama after his wealthy aunt dies. But in order to collect the generous inheritance she left him, he has to form a gospel choir and lead them to success. For her next project, Moore started on a revival of “Puriie,” the long-running Broadway musical that garnered her a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Dallas’ King will co-produce the revival. Moore said that the church is her base and that she was thrilled her business successes could come out of that base. “Absolutely. When it’s good business and good virtue, everybody wins,” she said.
