ever, he soon realized most of his students didn't even know English completely. This made him rethink his plan, and his goal became the education of the poor, minorities, the eld» erly and the imprisoned. When he started his school, other institutions wanted him to become extensions of them. Hardin declined. “We had to be independent in order for this to work,” he said. He saw himself as building an arc like Noah, which would protect the people by educating them. “We’ve helped low income people get better income through education,” said Hardin. He warns of the dangers of “institutional snobbery" that many places of higher education fall into. “An institution of higher education is about leadership,” he explained. “You have to work to make sure it’s meaningful and dedicated to the student.” Hardin believes himself to be a philosopher, something he tried to get his undergraduate degree in. His philosophy on education has earned him numerous awards in his life, most recently culminating in the International Citizen Award. “I’m very honored, this one is special,” Hardin said about receiving the award. He gives the impression that although all of the awards are good, they are simply reminders of his true goal: “To bring justice, love and forgiveness to higher education and the world”
