Shaggy gets lucky Continued from Cl
And while that track is doing well at radio. Shaggy admits that he really wanted to release the title track first. “Lucky Day” follows the antics of Shaggy meeting a woman and explaining to her that it’s her lucky day because he’s going to fulfill her dreams. Shaggy, are you sure you’ve given up your playing days? “Yes,” he contends. “I think even with a song like ‘Lucky Day,’ men are just braggadocios. We walk around saying, i killed it.’ You ain’t killing nothing - an eight-pound baby comes out of there, you ain’t killing nothing. I look at it like this, I don’t see how a man could walk around with his head up knowing that he didn’t please that woman. That’s what a song like ‘Lucky Day’ has to do with it. The lyrics are as cocky as you can get, and I got what it takes to back it up. And after 10 million records, that’s what you need to walk out there saying.” Still, Shaggy led with “Sexy Lady." He explained that after sitting down with his label and management, that it was best for him to open up the new
record with an up-tempo track. “I just came off a 10 million records-sold success and I’m not taking that for granted. I’m not saying that programmers at radio stations are going to put Shaggy on ‘A’ list heavy rotation. I know that they’re not. I’ve never had a record that’s been that easy. So I had to go back to basics to get programmers to play my record. I’m not worried about audience reaction. I’m worried about getting the Shaggy heard. Programmers get convinced when their Summer Jam audience is going crazy singing this song when you’re performing it. And you cannot get them to do that with a song like ‘Lucky Day’ because it’s a slower record.” So who’s picking it up? Well, R&B stations, pop stations, crossover stations, and the list grows. Hey, that’s Shaggy. “I want my records to be different. I wanted to come with this element to be different. Shaggy is designed to make programmers confused,” he explained.
