PACERS Continued from page B8

Kevin Garnett offered a lofty assessment of the Pacers. “I think Indiana should win the East,” said Garnett. While only the preseason, the numbers reflect the shift in emphasis. Including the Timberwolves game, last weekend in Conseco Fieldhouse, the Pacers notched over 10 steals for the fourth consecutive game. Eight out of 10 Pacers that played had at least one steal. Including the 83 points scored by the Timberwolves, the Pacers limited the opposition to 86 points or less in four out of five contests and won all four games. In the same four games, the Pacers held opponents to less than 40 percent shooting. The Pacers finished the preseason at Conseco Fieldhouse with a 4-0 record. Through the Minnesota game.

the Pacers have been playing without Reggie Miller, Austin Croshere and Attest due to injury. Artest’s return to the lineup should only intensify the Pacers’ physical and mental approach to the game, while Reggie Miller’s presence on the floor should increase the team’s confidence. Croshere, on the other hand, appears to be heading for another address. With the competition for playing time at the forward position (Harrington, Bender, Jeff Foster, Artest), it appears Croshere may be the odd man out. Rookie Fred Jones out of Oregon is emerging as a player and is sure to demand playing time. “The plays he makes, offensively and defensively... “ said Thomas. “He’s always aware where the defense is on die court. He is also very explosive in open court.”

Knicks star sues paper, spouts off and gets suspended

Electronic Urban Report Monday was a busy day for Latrell Sprewell. The emabattled and hurt (injured right hand) New York Knick star sued a newspaper, spouted off and got suspended. It started out with Sprewell’s agent announcing a $40 million lawsuit against the New York Post for its account of how he got hurt. Then, Sprewell met with reporters and denounced the way the Knicks have treated him, which was followed by an announcement from the team that he had been suspended one game for failing to follow his rehabilitation procedures. The AP reports that Knicks president Scott Layden called for the one-game preseason suspension, which will cost Sprewell $140,000 — l/90th of his $12.6 million salary. Already banished from the team until he can make ‘’a positive co£ tribution,” Sprewell will now be officially banned from Madison Square Garden when the Knicks

play the Utah Jazz in an exhibition game. ‘ ’They keep pushing me further away,” Sprewell said. ‘ ’We are very disappointed that we have to take these steps with Latrell, but his actions with regard to his rehabilitation have left us no choice,” Layden said. Now, back to the suit against the Post. Named in the suit was Post staff writer Marc Berman, who quoted two anonymous sources in an Oct. 4 story that said Sprewell was injured when he hit a wail while throwing a punch at a man whose girlfriend vomited aboard Sprewell’s yacht. “Those accounts are false and contributed to a breakdown in relations with the team, and contributed to the size of the fine,” agent Robert Gist said. Sprewell called the Post account ’’ridiculous.” “I slipped and tried to brace my fall on the deck of my boat,” Sprewell said.
