Plans for Central Library include renovating the original 1917 building to preserve its historical and architectural
significance. A six-story, 267,000-square-foot glass-framed addition will wrap around the current library from the north. Important features of the renovation include an enlarged main entrance to the historic • * structure, secure underground parking, improved accessibility to the library's collections, updated life safety systems and # better lighting. The transformed Central Library will open in early 2006.

Building a New Library for Indianapolis • Citizens celebrated the laying of the cornerstone for Central Library on March 24,1916. This scene faces east from the comer of N. Meridian and St. Clair Streets. This and other historic photographs will be displayed at the Groundbreaking Celebration for the transformed Central Library.
