trouble, nothing materialized. He began to feel that it would be impossible to find a job making nearly as much money as he had with the airline. Then an associate told him about the then newly formed AIR Project. “At first I was very skeptical,” said Turner. “I just didn’t feel like wasting my time on something that might not have worked out. And I thought that if they could help me get a job, I would be making considerably less than what I was. I eventually decided to go and the people at Goodwill have been very comforting. They helped me refresh my interview skills and they guided me through some frustrating times. 1 went on

four different interviews before I actually got hired at a decent job.” Turner says that his new job does pay less than when he was an airline mechanic, but he’s “still making more than I would have, had I not participated in the program.” The story of Dawn Smith is also a success. The single mother of three, Smith was a reservations agent for almost 16 years with US Airways. Like Turner, she also received her layoff notice last November. Smith enrolled in a two-year architectural technology degree program through the AIR Project and plans to have a career building

homes. So although her tenure at the airline abruptly ended, she still is able to pursue a totally new career doing something that makes her equally as happy. Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana Inc., is not limited to just the AIR Project, it also has a variety of other programs and services for all individuals, such as those who have little work history or minimal skills, people who have physical and mental disabilities, or some who come from the welfare system and work release centers. arrogant residents. New York has definitely been humbled, according to Sydnor. “People here are much friendlier and are more susceptible to speak with you now. Those terrorist acts really brought New York and our nation down to our knees. No longer is there so much cockiness and attitude.” Since 9-11-01, Sydnor says he hasn’t gone on Chambers Street, where the mass destruction took place, and he has re-routed his routine so that he doesn’t have to.' “It was very sad. Unfortunately thousands of lives were lost, so to go down there, it just rekindles a lot of bitterness and sorrow.” New York resident Samantha Jones agrees. ^ “I think out of respect for the families of the victims, we should not go to the site gawking and pointing. We should let their souls rest peacefully.”
