Dramatically different drug eases itchy eczema

(NAPS!) — There could be good news for children and adults itching to tame the symptoms of eczema. Eczema is a potentially life-altering skin condition that affects more than IS million Americans. It’s characterized by painfully itchy, red, swollen, flaky skin. Scientists are seeing dramatic results from a breakthrough class of prescription medications called topical immunodulators (TIMs). There are currently two TIMs available. Although indicated for different types of eczema, both have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in children over 24 months of

age. The first TIM, Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment), was proven safe and effective in clinical studies with more than 13,000 adults and children. Used alone, without the aid of steroid treatments, it significantly improved or cleared the signs and symptoms of eczema. Many clinical study patients showed marked improvement in their first few weeks of treatment. Protopic is used for patients with moderate to severe eczema who do not respond well to or may have side effects with traditional treatments. It can be used for short or repeated periods of treatment.

“Significant results were achieved with Protopic in clinical trials,” said Dr. Ana Duarte, Director, Division of Dermatology, Children’s Skin Center, P.A., Miami Children’s Hospital. “What is particularly important to the medical community and to patients is that these results were achieved without alternating steroids to help manage flare-ups.” Because Protopic is steroidfree, it can be used on the highly visible areas of the face, hands, and neck without the risk of skin thinning or stretch marks. The most common adverse effects reported in the clinical studies were stinging, burning

and itching upon application. There are two concentrations of Protopic. Only the lower concentration is approved for children ages 2 to IS. There may be an increased risk of certain types of skin infections for patients using Protopic. In addition, patients should avoid direct exposure to natural or artificial sunlight and should not cover treated skin with bandages, dressing or wraps. For more information about advances in healing eczema, call toll free 1-800-727-7003 or visit www.protopic.com for important product information.

Body clock breakthroughs can benefit your health

(NAPSI) — Tapping into your body’s secret rhythm may help you slim down, rev up and feel better than ever. “Research has shown that our internal clocks have a steady, builtin rhythm,” says Michael Smolensky, Ph.D., professor of

environmental physiology at University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health. “That means there ’ s a predictable, 24-hour cycle to virtually every single bodily function.” Here are some ways to get in sync with your body clock from

the editors at First For Women: • Eat a big breakfast (and a light lunch and dinner) to lose a pound a week. Research shows that food eaten early is converted into heat and energy, while food eaten in the evening is quickly stored as fat. • Forget about eating balanced

meals to make cravings vanish. The body’s ability to control blood sugar changes dramatically over the course of a day, and eating a protein-rich breakfast and lunch is one of the best ways to keep it stable. • Wake up at the same time every day to have more energy all week. Your internal clock controls your production of the sleep-trig-gering hormone melatonin. Keeping the gap between your wake-up time and bedtime constant ensures that melatonin peaks in the evening hours when you really need it. • Soak up the morning sun to get

more done. Bask in 30 minutes of sun first thing by eating breakfast beside a bright window, drinking your coffee on the patio or going out for a walk. Morning light exposure sets your internal clock, so your body temperature, energy level and alertness stay high during the day. • Plan your toughest thinking early to be 30 percent more effective. Studies show that mental alertness peaks around 10 a.m., making mid-morning the best time to deal with difficult subjects. • Tackle medical tests early in

the day to get more accurate results. The morning hours are the best time to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. Both can vary by 10 points or more over the day but since high morning readings are the ones strongly associated with health problems, they’re the ones you want to catch and treat. • See your dentist in the afternoon to optimize pain relief. Re-, search shows that local anesthetics, such as lidocaine, last three times longer if given between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
