CHILD Continued from A1 searching for the best way to help their children build mental defenses against potential kidnappers. Here is a list of her tips that will prevent your child from becoming another

statistic:

• Dr. Triplett advises parents to inform their kids that God, or a higher power, is chiefly responsible for safety. • Teach children that the obvious “bogeyman” is not the only threatening stranger. Anyone a child does not know is a stranger and kids must be cautious around these individuals. • Use "safety exercises" to prepare your child for a dangerous scenario. A safety exercise is any maneuver in which a child is able to actually apply what he/she learns during a rehearsal (such as a fire drill). Take the time to rehearse the following with your child: Dialing 911 and telephone communication skills, not opening the door to unfamiliar adults, locking all windows, and identifying "safe” public places they can run to if being pursued by a potential kidnapper. • If possible, always have your child walk with at least one other young person. The “buddy system" is amazingly effective, and is a deterrent to lazy abductors who target lone children. • Never put your child's name on their clothing, backpacks or any other material that can be seen in the open. This gives the abductor an easy way to greet the child by name and establish a false sense of familiarity. • Be honest with your child. Let him or her know how scary it is for you to read about other kids who have been abducted. But remind them that you will do everything you can to protect them. « Keep in mind that different safety skills are applicable to different ages. For example, “good touch and bad touch” seminars are more appropriate for preschoolers than they are for teens and middle flphnflters, Mwi^SJ*houleis can be ftwght hot “to in a tar with any stranger, even if they appear to be “cool” or “searching for a lost

puppy."
