Props for a true public servant: A special observation was held at Expo to commemorate Rep. Julia Carson’s 30 years in public service. Supporters noted the many accomplishments she has made on behalf of the community as a state lawmaker, Center Township Trustee and U.S. Congresswoman.
The lives and careers of media personalities Lynn Dean Ford and Lis Daily Crawford were celebrated and remembered by family, friends and co-workers at the IBE Media Reception held last week at the downtown Marriott Hotel. Awards were presented to surviving family members George Crawford and Jeffery Keith Ford In appreciation of their loved one’s contributions to the media profession. Carolene Mays, president and general manager of the Recorder, was the recipient of the Lynn Dean Ford Print Media Award. Also pictured are mistress of ceremonies Barbara Boyd and Charlotte Leavell, chairwoman of the Black Business Conference and IBE Media Reception.

A first at this year’s IBE Media Reception was the presentation of the Lynn Dean Ford IABJ Scholarship Award to Charity E. Hurst, a senior at Ball State University and former Recorder JAWS student.

Joy and pain: Rain didn’t keep Frankie Beverly from pleasing the crowd during the Music Heritage Festival’s Free Concert Friday. Frankie Beverly and Maze appeared with Regina Belle and the newly reunited Midnight Star.
