IBE, Nationwide and Recorder staff team up for Habitat for Humanity project

By JIM BUNTIN Staff Writer On July 13 construction went into full swing as Habitat for Humanity in conjunction with Indiana Black Expo. Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (INHP), Local Initiatives Support Corp (LISC), Radio One. The Indianapolis Recorder, Indiana Herald. OBIE Media, The Barritz Night Club and the Longhorn Steakhouse Restaurant. (Beech Grove location), all pitched in to make home ownership for one Indiana family a reality. Jeff Cameron and Amber Mills feel blessed that these local Indiana companies in partnership with Nationwide Insurance Co. helped to sponsor the “first" Nationwide Habitat Partnership Build Day. Cameron's mother called Habitat for Humanity and Dee Owens called back. Cameron said, “They asked me some questions to see if we qualified and we did." Mills said, “Thank you Habitat, you made our dream come true." Cameron and Mills are helping to construct the house themselves. They say they did much of the insulation work and some of the flooring too. The building site is located at 3220 Carpenter Court in Barrington Gardens on the city's Southside near Raymond and Perkins streets. Nationwide officials commented. “ We are excited

about this opportunity to work side by side with our partners, demonstrating dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life while revitalizing the Indianapolis urban community.” Representatives from each of the participating organizations were transported to the building site last Saturday to help in the construction of the 1,050 square foot. 3 bedroom dwelling which will be an addition to the Habitat for Humanity community that is rapidly expanding at that location. The Longhorn Steakhouse provided a continental breakfast and lunch for all the workers at the site.
