Family Service helping community for over 100 years

By OSEYE T. BOYD Staff Writer Helping families has been the purpose of Family Service since 1835. The private non-profit social service organization provides education and support services for families — children, adults and seniors. “We believe that healthy families make healthy communities so

we serve and support families with a range of services,” Michelle Payne, public relations director, said. “Our counseling programs include treatment for chemical dependency, domestic violence, individual and family counseling for issues like depression, past abuse, relationship problems, family communication problems.” Payne said, “We also have educational programs that include

parenting classes and life skills education courses. (Our) support services for older and challenged adults include home-based counseling and home care assistance so seniors can maintain an independent way of life in their own homes.” If Family Service doesn't provide the program a family needs, social workers will refer the family to another agency. Family Ser-

vice also has offices in Boone. Hamilton, Hancock and Morgan counties. The agency partners with Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership to help families get on the road to home ownership by dealing with credit issues. According to Payne, Family Service has social workers at Lilly and Atkins Boys and Girls Clubs to help families in those areas. The newest family-serving venture for

Family Service is the opening of the Life Solutions in Park 100 on June 19. “It's an employee counseling and work place enrichment program dedicated to serving local businesses. When an individual is suffering at home, they tend to bring that into the office. This program helps employees and businesses to tackle the problems at home. The program does that

through counseling, educational programs and consultations,” Payne said. Most programs at Family Service are offered on a walk-in basis although there are some programs that are referral only. Services are provided on a sliding fee scale and private insurance is also accepted. For more information on Family Sen-ice. 615 N. Alabama St., call 634-6341.
