Sports legends, friends host annual dinner for city’s homeless

By JIM BUNTIN The second annual dinner and auction benefiting the Homeless Initiative Program was held recently in Edy’s Grand Hall at the Indiana State Fair Grounds. The benefit was founded last year by former Indiana University basketball great Landon Turner. During the dinner on May 9, Mayor Bart Peterson proclaimed the day as Homeless Initiative Program Day throughout Indianapolis. HIP is one of the most activfe programs designed to eradicate homelessness and offers complete programs for the homeless including health care services, outreach, case management and employment training services. Turner enlisted a number of legends and community leaders to raise funds and awareness for HIP including: IU basketball coach Mike Davis, event co-chair and speaker Congresswoman Julia Carson; event co-chairs Mayor Peterson, Landon Turner, George McGinnis and Dale Neuberger. “This has become an event that more and more people from across the city and state have begun to support," said Dr. Ralph Dowe, executive director of the Homeless Initiative Program. “Homelessness is a major concern and we are very grateful to have so many people help us raise money and awareness so we can combat the problem and assist those in need.” For more information about the program, call Jon Mills at 931-3055.
