IndyPendence Career Development Center held their fourth annual Black History Celebration “Voices of the Past” Feb. 28 at the Julia Carson Government Center. Karen Banks-Drain, a counselor at IndyPendence, explains to the audience “Why Black History Is So Important.”

In honor of “Voices of the Past” the IndyPendence Choir sings of the proud and strong heritage of African Americans.

crossfire on gaming legislation, particularly if there’s something else that you care about," Peterson said. Dick Hamilton, a retired Indianapolis pastor who works with the Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, said his organization faces an uphill battle against a proposal he says ignores the social ramifications of gambling. “We’re working against fulltime people over there at this, and all the rest of us are just kind of doing the best we can," Hamilton said. In addition to expanding gam-

bling in Central Indiana, the proposal would authorize riverboat casinos on Lake Michigan and the Ohio River to remain permanently docked, rather than making regularly scheduled cruises. Patrons would be able to come and go as they wish. The bill would also transfer a dormant casino license for Patoka Lake to a new historic-preserva-tion district covering West Baden Springs and French Lick in Southern Jndiana. Proceeds from a casino there would be used to restore and renovate two historic resort hotels.

Paying tribute to our ancestors ability to turn scraps into feasts, the program concluded with a soul food lunch where such cultural staples as pig feet, greens, green beans and ham were provided. Guest speaker Derek King enjoys a serving of fried chicken.

Prevention

Gloria Sam, Ruble Alexander and Dorothy Campbell are all members of the Indiana Grassroots Coalitions Prevention Initiative for the Martindale/Brightwood/Forest Manor area. This Initiative is designed to Implement evidence-based prevention strategies for youth.
