The 30 graduates pose on the steps in the entranceway to the new Educational Center. Martin University awards 30 degrees at 1 st graduation in new building
Honorary doctorate goes to Rep. Carson Special to The Recorder Martin University celebrated another milestone last Sunday. For the first time in history, the graduates marched down the aisle in the new Martin University Educational Center's Gathertorium. The Bernice Fraction Performing Arts Center, the site of earlier graduations, had become too small to hold the audiences seeking to attend the ceremonies. Thirty graduates received their degrees in the ceremony presided over by Martin University President Rev. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B., while Sister Jane Schilling, vice president for academic affairs, awarded the degrees. Julia Carson, the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 10th Congressional District, received an honorary doctorate of laws from the University. Carson, a former state representative, state senator, and Center Township Trustee, is serving her third term in the U.S. House. Martin University was founded in 1977 by Father Hardin.
