The State is preparing to dramatically increase property taxes on rental units. A huge tax increase will raise rents, undermine affordable housing programs and could close some apartments. To identify and contact your legislator, call the renter's tax hotline, or visit our website.

Volunteers sought for tax preparation project benefiting working families
Special to The Recorder
Congresswoman Julia Carson, Mayor Bart Peterson and a coalition of community and government agencies are seeking volunteers to help provide free tax preparation and financial information for working families. Volunteers will be helping as part of an outreach campaign to assist working families who are eligible to obtain the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a federal tax credit that provides moderate and lower-income working families and individuals with tax relief, which can bring significant amounts of money back into their households. For example, single or married workers who are raising children in their homes and who earned less than $32,121 in 2001 may be eligible to receive an EITC payment of up to $4,008. In Indianapolis, thousands of families have failed to claim the credit. Many of these families include English as a second language individuals. Also, eligible workers often are not getting the credit because they have not heard of it, don’t know they are eligible or don’t know how to apply. For the 2002 tax season, the coalition will focus on expanding the volunteer capacity of five existing Internal Revenue Service (IRS) free tax preparation sites in several neighborhoods. At these sites, volunteers will provide free tax preparation to taxpayers and file the returns electronically. Volunteers also will provide information regarding financial
education and asset building resources. At two of the sites, Spanish-speaking tax preparers and translators will be available to assist Hispanic taxpayers with their tax returns. The coalition is seeking volunteers to prepare tax returns, mentor other volunteers, greet and assist taxpayers and provide financial services information. “Volunteers are critical to the initiative’s success and can have a dramatic effect on individual families and the community,” Mayor Peterson said. The campaign takes place from January through April 2002, and volunteer sites will be open in the evenings and on Saturdays. Volunteer schedules are flexible and no experience is necessary, since volunteers interested in preparing returns will receive training from the IRS. Individuals who are interested in volunteering can call Kate McNight of the IRS at 226-5391. For further information about the initiative, call Ellen Quigley of GIPC at 327-3862. The coalition includes Congresswoman Carson’s office, Mayor Peterson’s office, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Indy Saves, Purdue Cooperative Extension - Marion County, Indiana Department of Commerce/IDA program. Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Indiana, La Plaza, the Indianapolis Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Central Indiana Community Foundation and the IRS.
