Black Panther Party reunion rescheduled ( Special to the NNPA) — The reunion celebrating the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-De-fense, the organization targeted for destruction by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will take place in Washington, D.C., this spring, organizers announced. “The event will commemorate the historic legacies of the BPP, as well as the many sacrifices and constructive contributions that were made while servicing the people, body and soul,” say leaders of the It's About Time Committee, the reunion's organizers. The conference is set for April 18-20 at the University of the District of Columbia. It was cancelled last fall after the Sept. 11 terrorist. attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Founded in Oakland, Calif., in 1966, the Black Panther Party (BPP) was a revolutionary nationalist political organization founded to protect Black communities from police brutality and to provide community services. The Panthers were mostly young people ip their teens and 20s, clad in black jackets, black berets, rifles and Third World socialist* ideas.

Former state trooper says he was fired because he is Black LITTLE ROCK (AP) — In a complaint filed in federal court at Little Rock, a former Arkansas State Police trooper claims he was fired because of his race. Brandon Coleman, who is Black, said he was fired from his job after admitting to involvement in a domestic dispute on Dec. 22, 2000. In the complaint, Coleman states he first denied involvement in the altercation, but later admitted involvement. He says he was fired from the Arkansas State Police on April 20. “Similarly situated white employees of ASPD have been involved in domestic disputes and denied their involvement, yet they have not been fired by ASPD,” the complaint states. » Comedian Ivey, author of AfricanAmerican humor books, dies NEW YORK (AP)—Monteria Ivey, a comedian, radio personality and author known for his snappy insults and writings on African-American humor, has died. He was 41. Stephan Dweck, a longtime friend of Ivey's and his co-host on a New York sports radio show, said the comedian died of diabetic shock on Dec. 13, The New York Times reported. Ivey, who lived in Harlem, was bom in Manhattan on May 6, 1960. He started acting in high school, where he starred in several plays, before attending Dartmouth College. After graduation, Ivey began doing stand-up comedy, specializing in the form of insult known as “snapping.” His collected snaps, or one liners, later resulted in several books and two television specials. He also co-authored several other books, including Snaps. Double Snaps, and Triple Snaps. They traced the development of African-American humor from slavery to contemporary urban comedy.

1st African American * baby of 2002 Edwin and Tamika Bullock are the parents of Payton Evelyn Bullock, the first black baby born this year in Indianapolis. Payton was born at 5:35 a.m., Jan. 1 at Methodist Hospital and weighed in at 81/2 pounds and is 20” long. The couple also have a 4-year-old named Paige.
