. Exchange City teaches real life skills
Students learn how economic system works By FAITH BUNTIN For The Recorder Junior Achievement held a one-day, real life training simulation recently to allow children to switch places with Mom and Dad. Exchange City is an authentic, miniature town where students can learn more about how the economic system works. Hosted by the Junior Achievement, visiting Harcourt Elementary students experienced first hand running their own city for a day. At Exchange City, students take on the roles of producers and consumers. Children are elected to positions of authority but are supervised by parent volunteers and the staff members of Junior Achievement. With the guidance of Harcourt Elementary School officials, the children are taught experiences that they will profit from in their future. The combined fifth grade classes of Harcourt School spent about six weeks in preparation for their experience at Exchange City. This preparation included learning how to prepare personal and business budgets, writing checks, balance checking accounts, paying bills, running a business, filling out job applications, writing resumes, interviewing for employment, running an election campaign, the process of lawmaking and enforcing and much more. Once at Exchange City, the students make all the decisions,
laws, and judgments. The parents and teachers are present only to maintain a safe environment for the students. The students handle every aspect of running the businesses and city government. Some of the basic skills students practice at Exchange City are: Computing math problems, reading, speaking, deciding how to use resources to gain satisfaction, working together in groups, solving reallife problems and budgeting income against expenditures. The method of role-playing people at work in a mini-

ing with minority vendors. We are very pleased with SBK-Brooks’ services.” Girton, managing director for the Indianapolis office, emphasized that quality of work is the main determinate in all of the company’s awarded contracts. Being a minority-owned firm is a plus. “We knew that we had the capability to do the job and the track record to prove it. We are professional advisors who have a wealth of experience. Our service and the results is what attracts and keeps clients,” he said. SBK-Brooks Investments is fullservice brokerage firm that specializes in finance services for institutional, municipal, and corporate investors. The library is only one of the many projects in that SBK-Brooks has been involved. The company has had significant underwriting roles for the Indianapolis Convention Center, the Marion County Convention & Recreational Facilities Authority, Indiana Housing Finance Authority, the Indiana Transportation Finance Authority, the Indiana State Building Commission and others. Cleveland Brooks, an Indiana University graduate, founded the firm in 1987. In 1991, the ownership of the company changed when Eric Small bought the company from Brooks and became president. SBK-Brooks has swiftly maneuvered in the financial consulting industry, yielding acclaim from colleagues, clients and media across the nation. The company was cited by Black Enterprise as one of the top investment firms in the nation. Janet Davis, who is a member of the National Association of Securities Professionals, said, “The success of SBK-Brooks illustrates that good people can make good things happen. SBK-Brooks has aligned itself with a number of heavy hitters, people who have been deeply involved in their communities on all levels. We work in money, but sometimes the heart of the organization is most important. The leaders of SBKBrooks have selected people who are concerned with the growth and development of their clients.” Davis’ words ring true. Girton’s civic and corporate background strengthened the company’s standing in the Midwest when he opened the Indiana office in 1993. As a result of his many years of civic and corporate leadership, his relationships in the Indianapolis community are strong. n<
The broker has worked for reputable firms such as Thomson McKinnon Securities and McDonald & Co. Securities Inc. where he has overseen the underwriting of major Indianapolis development projects including Victory Field. He served as an Indianapolis Public Schools board commissioner, and currently contributes to numerous boards. Recently he was appointed to the Suoritous Partners board of directors. Suoritous Partners LLC is a multicultural investment management organization. The economics major at Indiana University, said that over the years his client focus has changed from working in retail — managing individual’s investments — to institutional investments. Girton still has a list of 1,000 retail clients that he touts as the best in the world. “It’s the relationships that matter. I have worked with some of the individuals for a number of years. They are confident in their position no matter the scenario with the market.” The name Girton is well known in the community. David is the son of Rev. Melvin Girton who has been a pastor for 40 years. “My father said that I found my calling. He was right. This is natural for me. To be part of the wonderful projects that Indianapolis has is a blessing. This is my ministry.” Girton said that there are a number of people who have been instrumental in his business pursuits including Rep. William Crawford, William Mays, and BishopT. Garrott Benjamin. “What makes it nice is that it’s, cool to grow up in a city and work on so many projects that are just cool,” he said. “My son, David Jr., and I were walking around downtown and I was able to point out Victory Field, the Convention Center and the library. Those things will be around after I’m gone, but it’s nice for him to know that dad had something to do with their development.” Girton’s motto has been “take care of home first.” “The revenues generated by the work wedo stays in Indiana. It makes sense to hire a firm like ours because we have the proven track record and we care about the sustainability of those projects.” “It’s good to show kids that the local guys can work on these larger projects and do an excellent job just like the firms in New York or Chicago,” he said.
