EDUCATION Continued from A1 and see examples of their schools; to talk to not just persons from Edison, but we’ve talked to principals, administrators, teachers, students, and we’ve seen the effectiveness of Edison charter schools. Also, we’ve got a short window to get everything together and there’s some question as to when we will receive the first installment from the state for the children so we’ll definitely need to have the capital,” Hicks said. Flanner House Elementary School opted to be supervised by a local lx)ard of directors. The school will also continue to base their curriculum on current Indiana academic standards. “We are not going through an educational management organization. We will be a public school run by people who live in this community ” Diamond said. Both charter schools are looking into ways to transport students to and from school. A transportation budget was established to make the schools accessible to all.

Charter schools are public schools that are freed from most of the regulations governing traditional schools. The schools are accountable for their own curriculum, staffing, organization and budget, and they must adhere to rigorous academic standards.
