ieform and empower parents on ugiat their children should be taught in the classroom,” says Frederick Penn, president and founder of LLL. “We are dedicated to teaching parents what to do, when to do it, and how to do it (in regards to their child’s education.) • ‘The secret is in preparation,” 'Penn explains. “We make sure pargntp understand the difference be"tween learning and education, ( Reaming takes place in the home, t education takes place in the class- , r^bm. We teach parents how to 'teach theirchildren so that the chi Id r can read by the time they start sqjfiool.” ( '.Early learning, Penn emphasizes, is critical. He argues that a ’ v'hijd should be actively involved ' 'jjiVeading in the home before startling, school and kindergarten. His group produces materials that in- ( struct parents on how to start children on a reading program from birth. _ r? j • • i( ^‘Children develop 85 percent of their adult intelligence from int fjjhcy through eight years of age,” sgys Penn. “Our young children absorb information with more precision and accuracy than at any ; other time in life. The home is your '‘chiid’s first classroom.” Penn adds ' (fiat such an approach builds the " foundation for a successful academic career and, ultimately, is more apt to lead to a successful fife. The LLL series is developed for , specific age groups, ranging from: ' i^ges 0-3 years; 3-6 years; 6-8 years; and 8-12 years. The LLL kits confain thorough video and audio cassettes, reading cards, full-color 'Children’s books, and a hardbound text. With the aid of the series, . parents can convert the home into 3 learning resource center for de- , vcjoping and practicing reading, mathematics, language arts, pronunciation and diction, science, ^reading comprehension and an arjjay of other slcills. The series materials are being t used nationally by Head Start programs, and progressive day care ’centers, parent’s groups and children’s institutions. . ( , Penn explains that his motivation for developing an African-cen-'jpr^d approach to early learning f jjljter reading in 1989 the book How [breach Your Baby How to Read. HC then developed approaches that were eventually adopted in the t bakland, Calif., school system. ^ ^yhere Penn used to be based. LLL ' {ipvy operates out of Prince Georges Xounty, Md. / His work has been recognized ‘ by, the California Legislature, and [fas been c jt e d by San Francisco /^ayor Willie Brown, Rep. Barpara Lee, D-Calif., and by Presi'deflt Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during their years in the White House. , i Recently, Penn and radio per- , spnality Joe Madison of Radio One Jt)$/, the nation’s largest Blackdowned radio broadcast company, have challenged the African- , American family, along with seven , Institutions, to better serve Black youth. These institutions, which include the public school system, Head Start, the church, day care .facilities, the foster care system, and the criminal justice system, are going to be pushed to provide the ■ support, the information and train? ing.to develop children academi- , cally and socially. . Penn has a segment “Learn, .j^am. Learn,” that airs nationally r^.very Thursday at 8 a.m. on
