ships for category’s like academics, community service, athletics, college majors, etc. Beware. Some sites charge a fee for “guaranteed” scholarships that you’ll never actually receive. It’s best to stick with sites from state and federal agencies and established, reputable companies. Compile a list of scholarships. The list should include: ^contact information (address, phone number) ^scholarship amount ^criteria ^application deadline Once your list is complete request an application from each sponsor by either calling or mailing a request along with a self-addressed envelope. Once you receive it, no matter how lengthy it may be, fill it out completely. “Some students pass up scholarship money because it takes a little work,” said McAfee. “They see the
word essay, then they don’t do it.” Students should also revise and correct their applications several times. “It’s critical when applying for scholarships that applicants proofread,” said Barnette. “It’s just like submitting a resume for a job. If there is an error the decisionmakers won’t even review the application.” Deadlines also matter. The earlier you submit your application and other requirements, the more likely you are to get a good financial aid package. Procrastination could cost you thousands of dollars. “One scholarship program called me and said they don’t have anyone who applied for the scholarships,” said McAfee. “I don’t understand it.” If you want to go to college, there is money to be had. Don’t be afraid to work for it.
